In Niger State, youths have taken to the streets of Suleja to protest the escalating cost of living crisis in Nigeria. The demonstration on Monday, July 29, 2024, has seen protesters expressing their frustration through chants and placards with messages like “Enough is Enough” and “Fuel Subsidy Must Be Back.”

Governor Mohammed Bago attempted to mitigate the unrest by distributing welfare packages and announcing a ₦20,000 wage allowance for state and local government civil servants. Additionally, he pledged to release 50,000 metric tonnes of food from state reserves at half price and promised a 90% reduction in food prices by the end of the year.

Despite these efforts, the protests are set to continue with a nationwide demonstration planned from August 1 to August 10. Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has endorsed the protests and called for peaceful demonstrations to address the economic hardships and demand improved governance.

UNN professor backs Sen Kalu’s push for part-time legislature to cut costs

Prof. Jonah Onuoha, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, has endorsed Senator Orji Uzor Kalu’s proposal for a part-time legislature in Nigeria. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Onuoha praised the idea as a beneficial step towards reducing the cost of governance and improving legislative effectiveness.

Onuoha highlighted that the current high cost of governance in Nigeria makes Kalu’s proposal timely and relevant. He believes that a part-time legislature would not only decrease expenses but also allow legislators more time to prepare and contribute meaningfully to the legislative process.

He commended Kalu for his patriotism and commitment to national development, noting that the proposal reflects a genuine concern for the country’s well-being rather than personal gain. Onuoha also pointed out that many Western countries operate with part-time legislatures, which contributes to lower governance costs and less electoral violence.

Overall, Onuoha supports the idea of amending the constitution to accommodate a part-time legislature, viewing it as a way to ensure more effective and less costly governance.

The Reign of Ga’a in the Old Oyo Empire: A Historical Overview

Ga’a: The Notorious Kingmaker and Kingslayer

Ga’a was a formidable and ruthless political figure in the 18th century Oyo Empire, known for his ability to both make and unmake kings. His rise to power and subsequent reign of terror is a significant chapter in Yoruba history, now vividly portrayed in Bolanle Austen-Peters’ new Netflix film, House of Ga’a. This film has reignited interest in the real-life events surrounding Ga’a’s dominance.

Historical Context

Ga’a’s military prowess earned him the prestigious title of Bashorun, the highest-ranking military commander in the Oyo Empire. With this position, he exercised extraordinary influence, becoming the ultimate kingmaker and kingslayer. His story is well-documented in Samuel Johnson’s 1921 book, The History of the Yorubas from the Earliest Times to the Beginning of the British Protectorate, which describes Ga’a’s reputation for mystical powers, including the ability to transform into animals like leopards and elephants.

Ga’a’s Reign of Terror

During Ga’a’s tenure, five Alaafins (kings) sat on the Oyo throne, each meeting a grim fate due to his machinations. Here are the fates of these Alaafins:

  1. Labisi
    • Historical Account: Ga’a became Bashorun on the 17th day of Labisi’s installation. Swiftly taking over, Ga’a prevented Labisi from ascending the throne and eliminated his supporters. Eventually, Labisi committed suicide.
    • Film Portrayal: In House of Ga’a, Labisi (played by Kunle Coker) appoints Ga’a (Femi Branch) as Bashorun after a victorious battle. Resentful of Labisi, Ga’a coerces him into suicide.
  2. Awonbioju
    • Historical Account: Ga’a installed Awonbioju as Alaafin but demanded homage, a reversal of traditional authority. When Awonbioju refused, Ga’a had him killed.
    • Film Portrayal: Awonbioju (played by Muyiwa Ademola) dies from a snake bite, a manifestation of Ga’a’s dark powers.
  3. Agboluaje
    • Historical Account: Non-confrontational Agboluaje incurred Ga’a’s wrath for being outdressed at a festival. Facing Ga’a’s aggression, Agboluaje poisoned himself.
    • Film Portrayal: Agboluaje (played by Gbenga Titiloye) hangs himself after a severe rebuke from Ga’a.
  4. Majeogbe
    • Historical Account: A formidable opponent, Majeogbe fortified himself with charms but still fell to Ga’a’s influence. He managed to poison Ga’a, crippling him, but was eventually overpowered and killed.
    • Film Portrayal: Majeogbe (played by Dele Odule) is killed by Ga’a’s mystic powers before Ga’a becomes temporarily crippled.

Ga’a’s Downfall

Ga’a’s reign ended during the rule of Abiodun Adegoolu, who initially showed submission to Ga’a. The fall of Ga’a marked the beginning of the decline of the Oyo Empire, as his military structures and networks were dismantled, leaving the empire vulnerable.

House of Ga’a and Historical Reflection

House of Ga’a offers a cinematic exploration of Ga’a’s life and his impact on the Oyo Empire, echoing themes from Adebayo Faleti’s earlier film on the same subject. Ga’a’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the dangers of absolute power and the complexities of historical political dynamics. The film, with Femi Branch’s portrayal of Ga’a, brings this dramatic period of Yoruba history to a global audience, sparking renewed interest and reflection on the past.

Burna Boy shocks fans with the announcement of a surprise album

In surprising news, Nigerian megastar Burna Boy has announced that he will be dropping a new album on July 30, 2024. This revelation, made on his X (formerly Twitter) account in the early hours of July 29, 2024, came with a brief message: “Album dropping 12M.” This announcement has sent fans into a state of euphoria, eagerly anticipating the release and wondering if it’s a prank from the Grammy winner.

Burna Boy’s announcement follows his recent celebration of the fifth anniversary of his Grammy-nominated 2019 album *African Giant*, marked by a concert at the Koko Camden. Known for his consistent output, with five albums in six years, this unceremonious and sudden album release seems uncharacteristic of the meticulous planning Burna Boy has shown in the past.

Some fans have speculated that the announcement might be a prank or a deliberately ambiguous message, particularly since it’s unusual for artists to release new material on a Tuesday. However, Burna Boy’s recent activities, including the release of his single “Higher,” in which he expresses gratitude for his success and takes an emotional trip back to his hometown of Port Harcourt, suggest that he may be ready to surprise his audience with a new project.

Regardless of the speculation, fans will be eagerly waiting to see if a new Burna Boy album will indeed drop at midnight on July 30, 2024.

Actor Williams Uchemba slams baby mama, baby daddy culture

Nollywood actor Williams Uchemba has taken a strong stance against the rising trend of ‘baby mama’ and ‘baby daddy’ relationships, condemning the practice as “madness” and “selfish.” On July 28, 2024, Uchemba addressed the issue on his Instagram account, specifically calling out individuals who intentionally have children to avoid the commitment of marriage.

“Guys, what is this madness that we are doing now? Especially some of the young men that I see now want us this stupidity? Because that is what it is. Why would you think it’s cool to intentionally impregnate your girlfriend just to have a kid just because you don’t want to be committed to a woman? Or because you don’t like the idea of marriage?” he questioned.

Uchemba emphasized that having children out of wedlock contributes to the deterioration of family values and negatively impacts the lives of those children. He explained, “It is an idea from the pits of hell and if you’re planning to do such a thing, remove yourself from that madness because what you don’t know is that you’re destroying the life of that child, not just your own.”

The actor further criticized the rationale behind young men who deliberately impregnate their partners to avoid commitment and the institution of marriage. “Majority of the problems around the world come from broken homes; either the father left or the mother isn’t there. There is a reason why God put the marriage institution in place and why he put family there. The purpose of a family is marriage and then procreation. You have no business getting anybody pregnant because you have your own selfish reasons for not wanting to be committed to one person. You’re selfish and it’s going to affect that child,” he explained, exasperated.

He also addressed women who choose to have children with their partners without the intention of marriage, criticizing this behavior as “Western nonsense” that undermines traditional family values. “And some of you girls now think it’s cool to intentionally have kids with your boyfriend. I see that madness going around, even in the entertainment industry. Who has taught you this Western nonsense?” he asked.

Uchemba concluded, “Did your parents raise you like this? It needs to stop; you’re destroying family values… If you’re not ready to commit, then get out of that space. It’s understandable if it’s a mistake but when it becomes intentional to avoid marriage but you want the benefits of marriage, you’re a thief. Let’s stop it! Wait if you aren’t ready.”

Destiny Etiko slams Nigerians for being excited for ‘BBNaija’ despite economic hardship

Nigerian actress Destiny Etiko has expressed her frustration with the public’s enthusiasm for the return of Big Brother Naija, given the ongoing economic challenges and security concerns in the country.

In a now-deleted Instagram story post, Etiko voiced her discontent, highlighting the contrast between the show’s popularity and the harsh realities currently faced by many Nigerians. She wrote:

“E don red for our country and I still dey see some people dey happy about BBN. Hmmmmm nawa o Oh una still get enough money for DATA Abi? If you guys do not complain, then who am I to do so? I am majorly concerned about the poor masses, though. That you can survive does not mean that everyone can. Crime is now happening everywhere, insecurity has become the order of the day and everyone is literally calm. THE EARLIER, THE BETTER.”

Etiko questioned how people can be so engrossed in entertainment when basic necessities and security are major issues. She pointed out that while some Nigerians seem to have the means to enjoy such shows, others are struggling with daily survival.

In another post, Etiko criticized the public’s apparent calmness in the face of widespread insecurity and economic instability:

“E don red for our country and a lot of us are still quiet like everything is fine a nawa o Well if u guys do not complain, who am I to do so? I am majorly concerned about the poor masses, though o. That you can survive does not mean that everyone can oooo. Crime is now happening everywhere, and Insecurity has become the order of the day and everyone is literally calm. THE EARLIER, THE BETTER.”

Her comments reflect a broader concern about the state of the nation and the disparity between those who can afford to engage in entertainment and those who are struggling to make ends meet.

No allowances slash, just adjustments – FG denies students allowance cut reports

The Federal Government clarified that it has no plans to reduce the allowances for scholarship students, contrary to recent media reports. This statement was made by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, during a meeting with the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Abuja.

Reports had suggested that the Federal Scholarship Board announced a reduction in allowances for foreign scholars in countries such as Russia, Morocco, and Algeria, attributing the cuts to economic crises. However, Mamman explained that there has been no slash in the allowances. Instead, adjustments have been made due to fluctuations in foreign exchange rates (FOREX).

Mamman emphasized that the ministry and the Federal Government are committed to ensuring students receive their full allowances. The adjustments are temporary and dependent on the current budget, with plans to pay any balance once additional funds are secured. He assured that the government would even be pleased to increase the allowances, dismissing any claims of a deliberate reduction.

LP crisis thickens as 2014 execs demand ‘consent’ judgement implementation

The Nigeria Labour Party (LP) is facing internal conflict as the 2014 executive members are demanding the implementation of a 2018 consent judgment. This judgment, if enforced, would nullify Julius Abure’s position as the national chairman, raising questions about the party’s stability.

At a press conference in Abuja, Callistus Uju Okafor, who was the acting National Chairman in 2014, and Mamman Bukar, the acting National Secretary, asserted that the 2014 national executive holds the legal authority to convene a convention to rectify irregularities within the party. Okafor, elected deputy chairman in 2014 and later acting national chairman in 2017, accused Abure of illegitimately assuming the chairmanship.

Okafor presented court documents and emphasized that the 2018 consent judgment mandates a comprehensive national convention, which has not yet been held. He detailed how the then-national chairman, Alhaji A. A. Salam, defied the judgment by extending his tenure and conducting an illegal convention in 2019.

Despite attempts at peace, including a settlement mediated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in June 2022, Abure reportedly ignored the agreements and extended his tenure illegally. In response, the 2014 National Working Committee members, beneficiaries of the consent judgment, have pledged to oversee an inclusive convention within six months to reconcile factions and restore stability to the Labour Party.

Lawmakers to remove federal universities from Band A power tariff to cut costs

The House of Representatives in Nigeria has announced plans to remove federal universities from the Band A electricity tariff plan to alleviate the high electricity bills these institutions face. Rep. Abubakar Fulata, Chairman of the House Committee on University Education, made this statement after overseeing federal universities in the Northeast, including Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in Bauchi and Federal University Kashare in Gombe State.

Fulata expressed optimism that the government would heed their request, similar to the adjustments made for the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS). The committee found that many universities struggle to pay their electricity bills due to the high tariffs. Fulata also urged university management to comply with relevant laws, especially the Appropriation Act.

During the oversight visit, Rep. Victor Ogene pointed out discrepancies in the financial records of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, questioning the appropriateness of spending significantly more on maintenance than the revenue generated from facilities like the guest house. Rep. Adamu Gamawa emphasized that extra-budgetary spending is unconstitutional.

Prof. Sani Kunya, Vice-Chancellor of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, and Prof. Usman Pate, Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Kashare, both acknowledged the committee’s efforts and sought legislative support to address their institutions’ challenges, including infrastructure and security issues.

Senator Ifeanyi Ubah has significantly strengthened the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State with a notable donation of ₦71 million. This contribution includes ₦50 million from Ubah himself and additional amounts from various supporters:

  • Princess Esom Nwafor Orizu: ₦5 million
  • Prince Emeka Egwuekwe (Apakata Onyi Enugwu-Agidi): ₦5 million
  • Chief Chinedu Okeke (Ekwe Ogidi): ₦5 million
  • Lord Michael Mbanefo: ₦3 million
  • Arinze Awogu (Ikemba Front): ₦2 million
  • Hon. Acobarry Chukwuma: ₦1 million

This substantial financial support is intended to boost APC activities and initiatives in the state, reinforcing the party’s position as a major player. Ubah’s efforts include providing Keke Napep vehicles, motorcycles, generators, branded uniforms, and organizing a significant empowerment program, all contributing to a revitalized and energized APC in Anambra.

Ubah’s leadership and support have addressed previous issues within the party, such as a lack of a reward system, and have fostered increased enthusiasm and commitment among party members. His contributions are expected to have a lasting impact on the APC’s growth and success in future elections.
