A 39-year-old doctor in Berlin has been detained on suspicion of four counts of manslaughter, police reported on Wednesday. The doctor, who works for a nursing service, is alleged to have killed four female patients, aged between 72 and 94, in their homes in June.

The Berlin police and public prosecutor’s office stated that the doctor, a specialist in palliative care, was brought before a magistrate after being taken into custody. He is also accused of attempting to cover up his actions by starting fires in three of the victims’ flats, although it is currently unclear how the women were killed.

One victim, an 87-year-old woman, was resuscitated by emergency services but later died in the hospital. In another case, the doctor is alleged to have killed a 76-year-old woman in her flat in the Neukölln district of Berlin, and then failed to set fire to her apartment before informing her relatives that he could not gain entry as she was not answering the doorbell.

This incident is not isolated, as another doctor in Berlin was recently convicted of similar crimes. In April, a former cardiologist at Berlin’s Charité hospital was convicted of killing two seriously ill patients with lethal overdoses in 2021 and 2022 by the Berlin Regional Court.

In a video released by the State House on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, Tinubu acknowledged the hardships resulting from the removal of fuel subsidies. He admitted that an “avoidable lag” between the subsidy removal and the implementation of his administration’s beneficial plans had exacerbated the difficulties faced by Nigerians.

“Fellow Nigerians, this period may be hard on us and there’s no doubt that it is tough on us, but I urge you all to look beyond the present temporary pains and aim at the larger picture. All our good and helpful plans are in the works. More importantly, I know that they will work. Sadly, there was an avoidable lag between subsidy removal and these plans coming fully online,” Tinubu stated.

The President urged Nigerians to have faith in his policies and assured them that the measures taken by his government would resolve the ongoing economic crisis. He emphasized his administration’s commitment to improving education by making it more affordable and providing loans to higher education students, ensuring no Nigerian student would have to abandon their education due to financial constraints.

“Our commitment is to promote the greatest good for the greatest number of our people. On principle, we shall never falter. I assure you, my fellow countrymen and women, that we are exiting the darkness to enter a new and glorious dawn. Now, I must get back to work in order to make this vision come true,” Tinubu added.

This marks the second time the president has addressed the nation amidst ongoing tensions and unrest across several states. In a national broadcast on Sunday, August 4, 2024, Tinubu acknowledged the grievances of protesting Nigerians and promised that his administration would address their concerns.

The recent #EndBadGovernance protests, sparked by economic hardships and hunger, have intensified the public discourse around the Nigerian government’s response to civil unrest. This has led to a notable exchange between the Presidency and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, reflecting contrasting views on managing public safety and upholding constitutional rights.

Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), issued a strong warning to Nigerian military leaders. He cautioned them against using lethal force on peaceful protesters, reminding them of potential accountability for crimes against humanity even after their retirement. He underscored the constitutional right to protest and called on the government and security agencies to protect peaceful demonstrators.

In response, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga criticized Atiku for not addressing the violence and looting that had marred some protests. Onanuga urged Atiku to take a cue from UK opposition figures who have supported government measures against riots. He emphasized that while Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution protects the right to protest, Section 45 permits restrictions for public peace and safety. Onanuga commended the security forces for their restraint and professionalism and called for a more nationalistic approach from Atiku.

This exchange highlights the ongoing debate about balancing civil liberties with the need for public order and safety, amid escalating tensions surrounding the protests in Nigeria.

“Enzo Maresca Criticizes Pochettino for ‘Habit’ Among Chelsea Players”

< 1 mn read

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has identified a key defensive issue that he attributes to the team’s previous regime under Mauricio Pochettino. Maresca revealed that Chelsea players have developed a defensive “habit” from last season, which involves positioning the defensive line too high. This strategic approach has led to vulnerabilities and a significant number of goals conceded.

Speaking after a 2-1 pre-season defeat to Real Madrid, Maresca explained that he is working to correct this habit by adjusting the defensive line. Specifically, he is instructing the team to drop the line by about four to five meters to gain a defensive advantage and better manage opposing attacks.

Maresca’s comments come as Chelsea has struggled defensively in pre-season, conceding 12 goals in five matches. This defensive frailty echoes the problems of the previous season, where Chelsea scored 77 goals but conceded 63, ultimately finishing sixth in the Premier League. The poor defensive record contributed to the team missing out on a European competition spot, as Manchester United claimed the final Europa League position.

Maresca’s focus on rectifying these defensive issues is a critical part of his strategy to improve Chelsea’s performance and ensure they are more competitive in the upcoming season.
