POLICE SAY MOTORCYCLISTS WHOSE BIKES WERE SEIZED ATTACKED BRT BUS IN LAGOS

The Lagos State Police Command has reported that suspected motorcyclists, whose motorcycles were seized by authorities, were responsible for the attack on a BRT bus on Wednesday in the Orile area of Lagos. The police clarified that this was not a case of armed robbery, but rather a reaction from the motorcyclists in response to the seizure of their motorcycles by the Lagos State Taskforce on Environment and Special Offences.

Command spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin explained that the task force had conducted a raid on commercial motorcyclists operating on BRT lanes and other prohibited roads, resulting in the seizure of several motorcycles. Some motorcyclists who resisted arrest during the raid were also apprehended.

In retaliation, a group of angry motorcyclists reportedly mobilized and attacked the nearest Lagos State Government facility they encountered, which happened to be a BRT bus. The bus driver, intimidated by the situation, fled the scene, leaving the bus vulnerable to vandalism by the motorcyclists. Although there have been claims of robbery during the incident, no formal reports have been made to the police.

This incident follows the task force’s impounding of 164 motorcycles on Tuesday for violating the Lagos State Road Transport Sector Reform Laws of 2018, which prohibits motorcyclists from using all highways in the state.

GRAND CONSPIRACY BEHIND RIVERS APC CRISIS TO UNDERMINE TINUBU – OKOCHA

< 1 mn read

Sir Tony Okocha, the interim Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, has revealed what he describes as a grand conspiracy aimed at weakening the party in the state and undermining President Bola Tinubu’s chances for reelection in 2027.

Okocha expressed concerns that loyalists of former APC leader Rotimi Amaechi are attempting to regain control of the Rivers APC with the intention of using the party to oppose Tinubu in the next presidential election. This conspiracy, according to Okocha, involves aligning the APC with the state government, which could jeopardize Tinubu’s political future.

This development follows a recent ruling by a Rivers State High Court, which reinstated Emeka Beke as the APC Chairman, nullifying the caretaker committee led by Okocha. However, the APC’s National Working Committee (NWC) has reaffirmed Okocha’s leadership, maintaining that his committee is the only recognized administrative body for the party in Rivers State.

Okocha criticized the court’s ruling, arguing that the APC was not a party to the lawsuit, and expressed concern that Beke’s leadership, which he claimed was imposed by Amaechi, was characterized by ineptitude and political high-handedness. He accused Beke and Barr. Iheanyichukwu Dike of engaging in anti-party activities, leading to their suspension from the State Working Committee.

Okocha is determined to prevent Amaechi’s loyalists from regaining control of the Rivers APC and using it against Tinubu in 2027. He emphasized that the party, under his leadership, will continue to uphold the law and has already appealed the court’s decision, with plans to take the matter to the Supreme Court if necessary.

“We are ready to go the whole hog,” Okocha stated, vowing not to allow the party to revert to its “social club status.”

Jaap Stam’s Critique of Antony and Manchester United’s Transfer Strategy

Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam has voiced strong criticism of Antony, the Brazilian winger signed from Ajax. Stam believes Antony is “not good enough” for Manchester United, especially given the expectations that come with his high transfer fee.

Antony, who joined Manchester United with a significant price tag, scored only once in the Premier League last season. Stam’s comments reflect concerns over Antony’s impact and consistency since his arrival.

Speaking on the William Hill podcast *Up Front with Simon Jordan*, Stam emphasized that players brought in for substantial sums should make a significant difference. He noted that Antony’s performances have not met these high expectations.

Stam urged Manchester United to invest in “better players” who can deliver immediately. He criticized the club’s recent transfer decisions, suggesting that while some new additions have shown potential, others have fallen short of the required standard.

Stam acknowledged that adapting to a new league can be challenging, but he stressed that players of Antony’s caliber must eventually demonstrate their quality by contributing with goals and assists.

The critique highlights the ongoing scrutiny of Manchester United’s squad and transfer strategy. Stam’s comments underscore the pressure on high-profile signings to perform and justify their cost.

Stam’s assessment reflects broader discussions about Manchester United’s squad effectiveness and the performance of expensive recruits like Antony.

Kalvin Phillips’ Loan Move to Ipswich Town Confirmed by Pep Guardiola

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Kalvin Phillips will be joining Ipswich Town on a season-long loan. This move will see Phillips play for the newly-promoted Championship side for the 2024/25 season.

Phillips opted for Ipswich Town over other Premier League clubs that were interested in him. This decision reflects his desire to secure regular playing time, which he might not have received at Manchester City.

Manchester City will cover a portion of Phillips’ wages while he is on loan at Ipswich. This arrangement helps facilitate the move and ensures that Ipswich can afford his presence in their squad.

Guardiola spoke to the media about the move, stating, “It looks like he’s going on loan to Ipswich. It’s close. I think it’s already done.” He acknowledged that Phillips made the decision to seek more game time, noting that City believed he might not get the minutes he deserves if he stayed.

Guardiola mentioned that Phillips has the potential to return to Manchester City in the future, indicating that this loan move is seen as a temporary solution to ensure Phillips gets the playing experience he needs.

Phillips’ arrival at Ipswich Town is expected to bolster their midfield, adding experience and quality to the squad as they navigate their first season back in the Championship.

This loan move aligns with Phillips’ goal of gaining more regular first-team experience, while also addressing Manchester City’s need to manage squad rotation and player development.

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola clashed with Raheem Sterling while he was at the Premier League club in 2021.

This was disclosed by author Marti Perarnau, a confidant of Guardiola, in his new book ‘The Pep Revolution’.

According to him, both men had a bust-up in March 2021 in Guardiola’s office, before Sterling walked out of the conversation.

This led to Guardiola dropping him altogether from City’s squad for a clash against Fulham.

It all began after Sterling was benched for a 5-2 win over Southampton. The England international had been offended by Guardiola’s decision and had begun acting up.

Perarnau has also claimed that part of Sterling’s frustrations was down to Guardiola’s constant praise of Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva, who had been in top form for the club.

The two will face each other once again on Sunday, August 18 at Stamford Bridge in an attempt to gather their first points of the season.

The recommendation underscores the strategic importance of securing a top-class striker like Isak. Merson’s comments reflect a belief that such a signing could be pivotal in achieving the clubs’ goals for the season.

Paul Scholes Criticizes Manchester United’s Signing of Matthijs de Ligt

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has voiced strong criticism regarding the club’s recent acquisition of Matthijs de Ligt. Scholes is concerned about the £43 million fee paid for the Dutch defender, describing him as a “second-class defender.”

Matthijs de Ligt, along with Noussair Mazraoui, was signed by Manchester United from Bayern Munich in a combined £60 million deal. De Ligt’s transfer alone cost £43 million, a figure that Scholes finds troubling.

Scholes questioned De Ligt’s quality and suitability for Manchester United. He pointed out that De Ligt has struggled to secure a regular spot at both Juventus and Bayern Munich, raising doubts about his ability to enhance United’s defense.

Scholes highlighted that De Ligt is not currently in Manchester United’s starting lineup, and noted that Eric Dier, who is currently ahead of De Ligt in the pecking order, is a significant concern. Scholes expressed skepticism about the rationale behind signing a player who is not deemed good enough to start for the team.

Scholes referenced De Ligt’s previous stints at Juventus and Bayern Munich, suggesting that his inability to perform consistently at those clubs indicates he may not be up to the standard required by Manchester United.

Scholes’ comments reflect broader concerns about Manchester United’s transfer strategy and the effectiveness of recent signings. The criticism underscores debates about whether the club is making the right investments to strengthen the squad.

This critique from Scholes adds to the scrutiny of Manchester United’s recent transfer activities and raises questions about the impact of De Ligt on the team’s defensive capabilities.

Nigerian actor Yul Edochie has shared his thoughts on the ongoing feud between the iconic twin pop stars, P-Square. In an Instagram post on August 15, 2024, Edochie emphasized that peace sometimes comes from staying apart rather than forcing reconciliation.

He wrote, “I see people say, ‘Rudeboy, go & make peace with your brother’, ‘Mr P, go & make peace with your brother’, I just laugh. Many people still don’t understand what life is about. Sometimes real peace comes from staying apart.”

Edochie highlighted the importance of personal well-being, stating, “Sometimes even some family members have to be blocked to achieve peace. Sometimes you just have to relate with people from a distance to have peace. Trying to be close will kill you. Life is short, especially for men.”

He stressed that maintaining personal peace and health should be a priority and expressed his support for P-Square, regardless of their relationship status. “Small thing man don fall. Too much stress. That’s why we have many widows everywhere. So you have to be intentional about your life. And life na per head. Block anybody that needs to be blocked so you can have peace. Don’t look back. Fight for yourself. Stay alive. It’s good to see Psquare together. But if they have to stay apart to be happy and alive for us, let them stay apart. We love them regardless,” he added.

Edochie’s post concluded with the message, “Being alive and happy is more important than being together.”
