“Chinese Firm Releases One of Three Seized Nigerian Presidential Jets”

A Chinese firm, Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial Investment Company, has announced the release of one of the three Nigerian presidential jets that were seized by order of a French court. The announcement was made on Friday through a company spokesperson.

The aircraft, an Airbus A330, was among three jets seized by Zhongshan following a court order. The seizure was linked to a contract dispute with the Ogun State government dating back to 2016, which led to the firm securing a French court order for the detention of the Dassault Falcon 7X, Boeing 737-7N6/BBJ, and Airbus A330-243.

In a statement, Zhongshan explained that the release of the Airbus A330 was a gesture of goodwill, prompted by the need for the aircraft to facilitate a scheduled meeting between Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and French President Emmanuel Macron. The firm’s decision to release the plane allows it to be used for the trip, which is expected to take place early next week.

The Nigerian government had previously announced that it was pursuing both legal and diplomatic measures to address the situation. The move by Zhongshan to release the Airbus A330 follows ongoing negotiations and efforts by the Nigerian government to resolve the issue surrounding the seizure of the aircraft.

This development marks a significant step in the ongoing arbitration efforts by foreign companies against Nigeria, as they claim the country has reneged on various agreements. The resolution of this specific case is seen as an important moment in addressing the broader challenges Nigeria faces with international arbitration.

Nollywood actress Lizzy Anjorin has addressed and debunked accusations that she stole gold worth ₦90,000 from the market earlier this year.

In an interview with media personality Timi Agbaje, Anjorin strongly refuted the claims, asserting that the accusation was baseless and absurd. She highlighted the improbability of stealing such a small quantity of gold, emphasizing the value discrepancy: “We’re talking about ₦91,000 worth of gold when a gram of gold was ₦150,000. A gram of gold is less than a grain of rice—how could anyone steal something so minuscule?”

Anjorin expressed frustration over the allegations, stating, “I am a certified jewelry seller and fabric merchant. The idea that I would steal a tiny amount of gold is ridiculous. I am too straightforward and disciplined to be a thief.”

The allegations stemmed from a February 2024 incident captured in a viral video where Anjorin was accused of shoplifting. The video showed her attempting to avoid being recorded, which fueled the suspicion. However, Anjorin later claimed on social media that she was framed by an individual she referred to as “Shekpeteri.”

Anjorin’s response underscores her commitment to maintaining her integrity and professionalism amidst the controversy.

HERE IS WHY YOUR FAVE CELEBRITIES DON’T ALWAYS HANDLE THEIR SOCIAL MEDIA

0
2 mn read

You might notice that your favorite celebrity doesn’t always run their social media accounts themselves, and there are several reasons for this.

**1. Brand Management: Okiki Oyeyiga, a social media expert, explains that managers often handle social media to maintain a consistent brand image. They ensure that all posts align with the artist’s public persona and avoid any content that might conflict with their desired image. This control helps prevent the artist from inadvertently posting something that could harm their reputation.

**2. Perception Management: Korie, who manages Nigerian artists, emphasizes the importance of managing online perceptions. A single tweet or post can dramatically impact an artist’s image, especially in the volatile Afrobeats scene. Managers step in to avoid any missteps that could negatively affect the artist’s brand.

**3. Opportunity Management: Sometimes, artists might miss out on important collaboration or business opportunities if they handle their own social media. Korie notes that even prominent figures like T-Pain have overlooked potential opportunities due to missed messages. Managers can help by spotting and seizing these opportunities on behalf of the artist.

**4. Communication Efficiency: Managers might take over social media to communicate vital information swiftly. Given the fast-paced nature of the entertainment industry, it’s crucial for management to adapt and relay important updates quickly, sometimes independently of the artist.

**5. Context Control: Baba Joe, who manages artists like Badman Niko, explains that management might step in to keep the artist’s posts in line with specific project themes or campaigns. If an artist’s post deviates from the planned message, management may temporarily take over to realign the content.

**6. Consensual Arrangements: Onah Uzonwanne, who manages celebrities like Toyosi Etim-Effiong, clarifies that the process is generally consensual. Social media managers work under the guidance of the artist and their team, and social media passwords are usually shared. In cases of legal issues, legal counsel is consulted before any online actions are taken.

In summary, while it might seem like celebrities are locked out of their own social media, the involvement of managers is often a strategic decision to protect and enhance the artist’s brand and career.

ARE STREAMING PLATFORMS DOING ENOUGH TO CURB STREAM FARMING?

0
2 mn read

Digital streaming platforms (DSPs) are intensifying their efforts to combat stream farming, a practice where artificial means are used to boost streaming numbers and manipulate charts. This issue has become significant in the Nigerian music industry, where vanity metrics and chart positions have increasingly driven marketing and success.

How Are DSPs Reacting?

Platforms like Apple Music and Spotify are investing heavily in technologies and methodologies to detect and prevent stream farming. This includes:

  • Forensic Audits: DSPs are conducting detailed investigations into streaming patterns to ensure streams are genuine. They monitor for red flags such as multiple accounts linked to the same credit card or unusually high volumes of streams from specific locations.
  • Real-Time Verification: Spotify verifies streams in real time to adjust chart positions and minimize manipulation.
  • Human Oversight: Apple Music employs a dedicated team to monitor streaming activities globally, combining technology with human analysis to catch fraudulent activities.
  • Penalties: Apple Music has stringent policies, including the removal of manipulated songs and possible penalties such as royalty deductions and blacklisting for offending artists and distributors.

Are the DSPs Doing Enough?

While DSPs are showing a commitment to addressing stream farming, their actions might be seen as reactive rather than proactive, potentially allowing manipulation to persist. Some criticisms include:

  • Late Intervention: The crackdown might be seen as too late, as streaming manipulation has been an ongoing issue.
  • Focus on Smaller Artists: The current measures seem to disproportionately affect smaller artists, while bigger names with more resources might still engage in manipulation with fewer repercussions.

Who Is Best Positioned to Curb Stream Farming?

Ultimately, while DSPs play a crucial role, the responsibility also lies with artists, labels, and distributors. They can choose not to engage in stream manipulation, which is a digital evolution of past practices like artificially inflating CD sales. To combat this:

  • Constant Innovation: DSPs need to continuously update their technologies and processes to stay ahead of manipulative practices.
  • Industry-Wide Integrity: A broader commitment from all stakeholders in the music industry to uphold ethical practices is essential.

In summary, while DSPs are making significant efforts to curb stream farming, a combined approach involving ongoing technological advancements, stringent penalties, and a collective commitment from the industry is crucial for effectively addressing this issue.

The controversy stems from Oshiomhole’s appearance on Arise News, where he allegedly made “reckless and unfounded statements” about Ighodalo’s candidacy.

INTERVIEW: Why Ogun’s CNG Initiative is a Game Changer – Gov. Abiodun

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has elaborated on why the introduction of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is a transformative move for Ogun State and Nigeria. In an interview with journalists, Abiodun discussed how the conversion of state buses to CNG and the introduction of electric and CNG-powered vehicles are addressing the effects of fuel subsidy removal and aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

1. CNG Initiative and Its Impact
Governor Abiodun highlighted that Ogun State launched its CNG Mass Transit Programme last year, converting state-owned buses to CNG-powered models. This was a proactive measure anticipating the deregulation of fuel prices.
On Wednesday, Ogun State introduced electric motorbikes, tricycles, and CNG vehicles. This initiative aims to cut transportation costs by approximately 45%, reduce pollution, and stimulate local economies through new charging stations.

2. Comparison with Fuel Costs
Abiodun shared that CNG-powered tricycles, which previously cost around N14,000 for a full tank of fuel, now cost only about N2,000 to operate for the same distance. This significant reduction in cost is expected to ease transportation expenses for residents.

3. Strategic Advantage
Ogun State’s proximity to Lagos and its access to gas pipelines give it a unique advantage in implementing the CNG initiative. Abiodun noted that this strategic position facilitated the rapid adoption of CNG technology in the state.

4. National Context
The governor addressed the broader context of the CNG initiative, mentioning that while there were reports of federal support for CNG mass transit, actual disbursement and implementation are still ongoing. He emphasized that national rollout will take time but is expected to follow Ogun State’s lead.

5. Addressing Inflation and Subsidy Removal
Abiodun emphasized that reducing transportation costs is crucial, as high transport expenses contribute to inflation and affect food prices. The CNG initiative is part of a broader strategy to mitigate these impacts.

6. Government Actions and Economic Reforms
Abiodun praised President Tinubu’s efforts to address the economic challenges resulting from fuel subsidy removal. He mentioned various government actions, including wage awards, student loans, and agricultural support, aimed at alleviating the economic burden on Nigerians.

7. Public Engagement and Governance
The governor defended the current administration’s responsiveness to public concerns and its commitment to addressing governance issues. He noted the government’s efforts to engage with different groups and explain its policies.

8. Future Prospects
Abiodun expressed confidence that the ongoing efforts to stabilize the economy and reduce transportation costs will yield positive results over time. He encouraged patience from the public as the benefits of these policies unfold.

This interview underscores Ogun State’s innovative approach to transportation and energy solutions while reflecting on the broader national context of economic reform and policy implementation.

Speaking at the launch of a book titled “Navigating the Politics of Universal Education Policies in Nigeria,” authored by former Ekiti Deputy Governor Prof. Modupe Adelabu, Shettima expressed confidence in Tinubu’s intentions, stating, “I have seen the soul of Bola Tinubu, and he has a good soul.”

Shettima addressed misconceptions about Tinubu, noting that he is often demonized despite having no interest in personal wealth accumulation. He highlighted Tinubu’s focus on significant reforms, particularly in the education sector, where the President is working to remove obstacles to universal education in Nigeria.

Shettima also discussed the recent Supreme Court ruling that granted financial autonomy to local governments, which he believes will enhance the delivery of primary education. However, he warned against misusing this autonomy and stressed the importance of collaboration between the Federal, State, and local governments to achieve educational goals.

The Vice-President praised Tinubu’s initiatives, such as the Students’ Loan Scheme, which aims to secure the future of Nigerian children by making education more accessible. Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti and former First Lady of Ekiti, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, echoed the call for a reevaluation of Nigeria’s education system to better serve the nation’s needs.
