He indicated that the new appointments will take effect on November 1, 2024, and will include a revamped Management team and Governing Council for the institution.

ABUJA TO TRANSFORM UNDER TINUBU’S TENURE, SAYS FCT MINISTER NYESOM WIKE

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, has projected significant changes to Abuja by the end of President Bola Tinubu’s first term in 2027, attributing this transformation to extensive infrastructural development.

Wike made this statement during the inauguration of the upgrading of War College/Army Checkpoint Road and other ancillary roads in Ushafa, Bwari Area Council, on Monday. He emphasized that by the conclusion of this administration, Abuja would be markedly different in terms of infrastructure.

Beyond the capital itself, Wike highlighted that the area councils are also undergoing transformation, with more than 15 projects currently in progress. He noted that three additional projects are slated for inauguration in satellite towns.

“When we came on board, I did say that under Tinubu’s administration, when he makes a promise, all you need to do is be patient; that promise would be fulfilled,” Wike stated. He emphasized the importance of accountability, urging citizens to hold their elected officials responsible for their commitments.

Wike challenged skeptics of the Tinubu administration’s accomplishments, insisting that the achievements in the six area councils over the past year are verifiable facts rather than propaganda. “This is just one year and a few months. Mr. President has been in office, but see what he has done in terms of infrastructure in area councils,” he remarked, prompting speculation about the potential advancements by the end of Tinubu’s four-year term.

In addition to road infrastructure, Wike revealed that the Tinubu-led government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a Chinese company to provide potable water to the Kwali, Gwagwalada, and Kuje area councils. He urged residents of the FCT to support the Tinubu administration in its efforts to benefit the people.

Wike clarified that the project to upgrade the War College/Army Checkpoint Road and related roads began prior to the current administration. The 18-kilometer road project, awarded to Abdul Val Limited on September 28, is expected to be completed within 18 months. Wike expressed satisfaction with the progress made and the commitment of local contractors to the project, reflecting Tinubu’s directive to empower indigenous contractors who demonstrate capacity and willingness to work.

VINICIUS JR. COMMITS TO FIGHTING RACISM DESPITE BALLON D’OR SETBACK

Brazil and Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr. has expressed his commitment to continue fighting against racism, even if his activism is perceived as a reason for not winning the Ballon d’Or. Following the announcement that he finished second in the prestigious award voting—behind Manchester City midfielder Rodrigo—Vinicius took to social media to reaffirm his stance.

Vinicius stated, “I will do it 10 times if I have to. They’re not ready,” referring to his ongoing battle against racism in football. His remarks followed Real Madrid’s decision to boycott the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris, anticipating that he would not win the award.

Sources close to Vinicius indicated that his activism was a contributing factor to the award outcome, suggesting that “the football world is not ready to accept a player who fights against the system.” This reflects the broader issues of racism within the sport, which Vinicius has faced on multiple occasions in Spain.

While Vinicius did not win the Ballon d’Or, Real Madrid secured the Men’s Club of the Year award, and manager Carlo Ancelotti was named Men’s Coach of the Year after leading the team to a successful season.

Following the announcement, Vinicius received an outpouring of support from teammates. Eduardo Camavinga shared a message on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “FOOTBALL POLITICS X. My brother, you are the best player in the world, and no award can say otherwise. Love you, my bro.” Many teammates echoed similar sentiments, celebrating Vinicius as the best player despite the award results.

Renowned Brazilian footballer Marta expressed her disappointment, stating, “I waited all year for Vini Jr to be deservedly recognized as the best player in the world, and now they come to tell me that the Ballon d’Or is not for him.”

Vinicius Jr.’s unwavering stance against racism in football highlights the ongoing struggles faced by athletes in addressing systemic issues within the sport. Despite not winning the Ballon d’Or, his influence and contributions to Real Madrid’s success, as well as his commitment to social justice, resonate with fans and fellow players alike. The support he has garnered reinforces the sentiment that his impact goes beyond awards and recognition, as he continues to advocate for change in the football community.

Overview of the 16th BRICS Summit: A New Era in Global Cooperation

0
2 mn read

The 16th BRICS Summit, held from October 22 to 24, 2024, in Kazan, Russia, marked a significant moment in the evolution of the group, which expanded from BRIC to BRICS+. This year’s summit, themed “Strengthening Multilateralism for Fair Global Development and Security,” welcomed five new members: Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

This gathering, attended by leaders and representatives from over 20 countries, highlighted a shift in global dynamics. It served as a testament to Russia’s continued influence, despite Western efforts to isolate it following the Ukraine invasion and earlier events like the annexation of Crimea. The summit not only emphasized the resilience of Russia but also showcased its strong ties with countries in the Global South.

Key Outcomes and Significance of the Kazan Declaration

One of the primary aims of the summit was to foster an alternative to the existing Western-dominated global governance structures. The Kazan Declaration that emerged from the summit included several critical agreements:

  1. UN Security Council Reform: The declaration called for a reformed United Nations Security Council, advocating for the inclusion of the State of Palestine in the UN, contingent upon a two-state solution agreement.
  2. Alternative Financial Systems: Leaders discussed the feasibility of establishing an independent cross-border settlement system, moving away from the SWIFT network, which is primarily influenced by Western powers. There were also suggestions to utilize national currencies and payment systems to enhance financial autonomy.
  3. Strengthening the New Development Bank (NDB): The summit proposed invigorating the NDB, established in 2014, to provide member countries with enhanced financial resilience against external shocks.

Nigeria’s New Role as a BRICS+ Partner Country

A notable highlight for Nigeria was its designation as one of 13 partner countries to BRICS+, alongside Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam. This status raises questions about its implications:

  • Partner Country Designation: While the criteria for becoming a partner country remain unclear—unlike the structured membership requirements of entities like the European Union—it suggests that these nations have expressed interest in joining or are being considered for future membership.
  • Geopolitical Considerations: The selection of partner countries seems to align with strategic geopolitical considerations, similar to the factors influencing the last expansion at the 15th summit. For instance, Ethiopia‘s inclusion is significant due to its rapid economic growth and role as the seat of the African Union, while Egypt serves as a critical link between Africa and the Arab world.

The Implications of BRICS+ Expansion

The admission of major oil producers like Saudi Arabia and Iran into BRICS+ signifies a potential reconfiguration of global energy politics. Saudi Arabia’s alignment with BRICS brings it into an economic bloc with China, the world’s largest oil importer. This move could reshape energy trade dynamics and foster collaboration among OPEC+ members.

The broader implications of these developments point to a growing desire among BRICS nations to challenge established power structures, such as the G20. As the African Union was recently admitted as the 21st member of the G20, BRICS+ aims to position itself as a counterbalance to such groupings.

Conclusion

The 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan underscored a critical moment in international relations, with the group emerging as a formidable force advocating for multilateralism and equitable global governance. The expansion of BRICS+ and the formation of strategic partnerships among member countries reflect a shifting landscape in global politics, where traditional power dynamics are increasingly challenged. For nations like Nigeria, this partnership represents a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue and collaboration that could enhance their economic and political standing on the world stage.

PICK ‘N PAY TO EXIT NIGERIA AMID CHALLENGING BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT

< 1 mn read

Pick ‘n Pay, the South African retail giant, has announced its decision to exit the Nigerian market as part of a broader restructuring strategy beyond its home territory. CEO Sean Summers made this statement on Monday, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by multinationals operating in Nigeria.

Background on Nigerian Operations

Pick ‘n Pay entered Nigeria less than five years ago through a partnership with A.G. Leventis (Nigeria). However, its exit adds to a troubling trend of multinational companies withdrawing from the Nigerian market.

This development follows similar moves by other retailers, such as Shoprite, which closed its Abuja store on June 24 after assessing its financial performance amid the current business climate. Notably, Shoprite had previously shut down its Kano store in January 2024.

Broader Industry Trends

The retail sector is not the only one experiencing difficulties; Jumia, a prominent e-commerce platform, also announced the closure of its food delivery service, Jumia Food, in Nigeria in December 2023. Jumia cited unfavorable market conditions as the reason for this decision, which reflects a broader trend of multinational corporations reassessing their operations in the country.

Other notable exits include GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Consumer Nigeria Plc, Procter & Gamble, Sanofi, and Kimberly-Clark, all of which have left Nigeria due to the challenging business environment.

The exit of Pick ‘n Pay and other multinationals signifies a worrying trend for the Nigerian economy, raising concerns about the country’s attractiveness to foreign investors. As these companies reevaluate their strategies, the impact on local employment and economic growth remains to be seen.

Hon. Ahmed Satomi, the member representing Jere Federal Constituency in Borno State, has initiated the distribution of 25kg assorted bags of wheat to approximately 5,600 constituents. This effort aims to provide relief to those affected by the recent flooding that severely impacted Maiduguri and the Jere local government areas.

Response to the Flood Disaster

The flood, which occurred on September 10, 2024, resulted in widespread destruction, prompting Hon. Satomi to take action. He had previously donated N200 million to the Borno State Government’s Relief and Disbursement Committee and allocated an additional N100 million in cash assistance directly to victims in his constituency.

At the unveiling of the wheat distribution on Tuesday at the Old Maiduguri Progressives House, Satomi highlighted that the bags of wheat primarily originated from Satomi Integrated Farms Ltd. The distribution effort kicked off with 1,051 beneficiaries from Maimusari and Mashamari Wards and is set to extend to all remaining wards in the constituency.

Ongoing Support

The initiative is aligned with the Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum‘s appeal for well-to-do individuals to assist the government in addressing the hardships faced by the community during this challenging time. Hon. Satomi emphasized that this distribution is just one part of ongoing efforts to support flood victims, stating that more initiatives will follow.

He acknowledged the severe economic challenges that Nigerians, particularly those in Jere, are facing. Satomi urged patience with the government’s current policies, assuring constituents that there will be light at the end of the tunnel.

Personal Impact and Commitment

Expressing his own losses, Satomi shared that he lost 2,000 hectares of rice crops during the flooding. He encouraged constituents to view their difficulties as part of a larger divine plan and reiterated his commitment to supporting them both economically and otherwise as their representative in the national assembly.

In conclusion, the wheat distribution serves not only as immediate relief for those affected by the floods but also as a demonstration of Hon. Satomi’s dedication to the welfare of his constituents in Jere Federal Constituency.

LANDOWNERS OF OGBE-OZONA QUARTERS REJOICE OVER POLICE INTERVENTION IN LAND GRABBING CASE

Landowners from the Ogbe-ozona Quarters of Okpanam, located in the Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, expressed their gratitude for the proactive intervention of Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun regarding the alleged illegal seizure of their land.

Community Response

In a statement issued to journalists in Owerri, signed by community leaders including Chief Felix Okafor, Mr. Sunday Nwanze, Mr. Lucky Abuah, and Mr. Chinedu Ofuani, the community emphasized their appreciation for the Inspector General’s commitment to conducting a thorough and transparent investigation into the matter. They noted that this development could potentially put an end to the ongoing criminal activities affecting their community, and they look forward to exposing the illegal actions of those involved.

The landowners expressed concern over the possibility of serious criminal offenses, such as illegal possession of firearms and aggravated murder, being reduced to lesser charges like forceful entry. They characterized such outcomes as compromises that undermine the pursuit of justice, citing strong evidence against the suspects involved.

Legal Support

The community’s legal counsel, Bar Ifeanyi Ejiofor, commented on the Inspector General’s intervention, stating that similar petitions had been submitted to the Chairman of the Police Service Commission and the Attorney General of the Federation, and they are awaiting responses from those bodies. Ejiofor expressed optimism that the recent developments signal a positive change for the Ogbeozoma community, indicating that there may finally be light at the end of the tunnel in their quest for justice.

Background of the Issue

The Inspector General’s directive came in response to a petition dated September 23, 2024, which detailed a series of criminal activities allegedly perpetrated by a notorious land grabber named Chinedu Okeke (also known as Ekwe Ogidi) and his accomplices. The petition outlined disturbing claims of police complicity in the undermining of investigations and highlighted the violent trespassing, property destruction, and murder incidents affecting the Ogbeozoma community.

The landowners noted that certain law enforcement officers had been implicated in aiding the ongoing injustices, which they believe has allowed for the continuous harassment of their peaceful community.

Conclusion

The Ogbe-ozona landowners remain hopeful that the intervention by the Inspector General will lead to meaningful changes in their situation, ensuring their rights are upheld and justice is served against those who have perpetrated violence and land grabbing in their community. The collective voices of the community leaders reflect a determined stand against the injustices they have faced and a commitment to restoring peace and order in Ogbeozoma Quarters.

NORTHERN GOVERNORS RESPOND TO YOUTH RESTIVENESS AND ECONOMIC CHALLENGES

In a significant meeting held in Kaduna, the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF), led by Chairman Governor Muhammadu Yahaya of Gombe State, addressed the pressing issue of youth restiveness in the region, following the impactful #End Bad Governance protests in August. The governors emphasized the need for urgent action to tackle the root causes of youth dissatisfaction, which they attributed to illiteracy, poverty, and a lack of economic opportunities.

Call for Action

Governor Yahaya underscored the urgency of listening to the voices of young people, stating, “Our young people are calling out for change, and it is our responsibility to listen and act. We must scale up efforts to tackle the root causes of youth restiveness by investing in education, skills development, and job creation.” He stressed the importance of creating pathways for the youth to engage in productive activities, thereby reducing their vulnerability to crime and social vices.

The meeting also gathered political leaders, traditional rulers—including the Sultan of Sokoto—and key stakeholders, such as the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa. The discussions revolved around addressing the multifaceted challenges facing the Northern region.

Addressing Economic Inequality

Governor Yahaya pointed out the stark economic hardships prevalent in Nigeria, particularly in the North, stating, “The economic hardship faced by many Nigerians today is undeniable, and considering the North-South disparity in economic inequality, it is even more pronounced in northern Nigeria.” He called for urgent interventions, including targeted social welfare programs, support for small and medium enterprises, and policies aimed at attracting investment.

Rejection of the Tax Reform Bill

In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the NSGF unanimously rejected the proposed Tax Reform Bill sent to the National Assembly. The governors acknowledged recent progress in combating criminal activities, particularly the elimination of bandit and terrorist leaders, and commended the Federal Government and security agencies for their efforts in ensuring community safety. However, they recognized the need for continued efforts to address the remaining challenges in the Northern region.

Focus on Electricity and Agricultural Potential

The governors expressed concern over ongoing electricity blackouts affecting many Northern states, calling for urgent action from the Federal Government and relevant agencies to address the vandalism of electricity transmission infrastructure. They highlighted the need to build national transmission lines and diversify energy supplies to improve energy resilience in the region.

Recognizing the immense agricultural potential of Northern Nigeria, the governors resolved to support farmers by providing access to financing, modern farming techniques, and necessary infrastructure. They stressed that agriculture should be viewed not only as a means to feed the population but also as a catalyst for industrialization and job creation. The revitalization of the textile value chain and development of agro-allied industries were identified as crucial steps for economic growth.

Commitment to Climate Change Adaptation

The forum also addressed the impact of climate change, particularly recent flood incidents in the North. They resolved to collaborate with the Federal Government and other stakeholders to build irrigation infrastructure, such as canals and waterways, to enhance rural livelihoods and safeguard food security.

Conclusion

The meeting of the Northern States Governors’ Forum reflects a proactive approach to addressing the urgent needs of the youth and economic challenges in the Northern region of Nigeria. By prioritizing education, job creation, and infrastructure development, the governors aim to foster a more equitable and prosperous future for their constituents.

In a continued effort to uphold Enugu State’s polio-free status, Governor Peter Mbah’s administration reaffirmed its dedication to public health initiatives during the observance of World Polio Day.

Commitment to Public Health

During a press briefing organized by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Prof. Emmanuel Obi, emphasized Enugu’s unwavering commitment to sustaining its achievements in remaining polio-free.

World Polio Day, observed annually on October 24, serves to raise awareness about global efforts to eradicate polio and highlights the importance of vaccinations in protecting children from this disabling disease. Nigeria’s certification as polio-free in August 2020 marked a significant milestone, and Enugu State continues to build on that success.

Call for Vigilance and Collaboration

Prof. Obi, represented by Chinwe Anibeze, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, stressed the necessity of vigilant surveillance, increased immunization efforts, and the need to address obstacles that hinder progress. He called for active participation from all stakeholders, stating, “Together, we can achieve this goal and ensure a healthier future for our children.” He also acknowledged WHO’s vital support in ensuring that all eligible children are vaccinated.

Dr. Adaeze Ugwu, WHO’s State Coordinator for Enugu, elaborated on the agency’s assistance in enhancing local capacity for polio eradication. This includes training local security forces to support vaccination teams in high-risk areas. “The agency plays a key role in vaccination campaigns targeting children aged 0-59 months and strengthens disease surveillance to promptly detect and respond to Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) cases,” she explained.

Supportive Workforce and Community Engagement

Additionally, WHO deploys a dedicated workforce comprising Surveillance Officers, Field Volunteers, and community informants who conduct surveillance at health facilities, settlements, and various administrative levels to ensure timely detection and reporting of cases.

With ongoing commitment and collaboration, Enugu State remains well-positioned to safeguard its polio-free status for the benefit of all residents, ensuring a healthier future for children in the region.

The Rescue Movement for New Nigeria, also known as the Rescue the Vulnerable Initiative, has expressed deep concern over the ongoing power outages affecting most parts of northern Nigeria and some southern states. The group highlighted that the national grid experienced another collapse over two weeks ago, exacerbating the already dire situation.

In a statement issued by Rev. Emmanuel Olorunmagba, the National Director of Media and Publicity for the group, the blackout was described as “another monumental national disaster that is now killing the already crippling businesses across the country.”

The statement emphasized, “In a country already facing significant economic challenges due to the high cost of fuel following the removal of subsidies, prices of goods have soared, crippling businesses. The collapse of the national electricity grid has become a recurring unfortunate event since the APC took over power.” It was noted that 17 out of 19 states in northern Nigeria—namely Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara—have been experiencing total blackouts, along with some southern states.

The group warned that the situation is devastating many small and medium-sized businesses already struggling under the weight of poorly timed policies. They pointed out that sellers of frozen foods, such as chicken and fish, are particularly hard-hit, with many forced to discard their perishable items due to the lack of power.

Additionally, those who own generators face skyrocketing fuel prices, with the pump price exceeding N1,000 per liter. Many are forced to resort to the black market, where prices reach an outrageous N1,500 per liter.

The group lamented, “This kind of terrible situation has never happened in the history of this country, and perhaps even in other parts of the world. Where are we going in Nigeria?”

COLEMAN WIRES AND CABLES LIMITED CALLS FOR URGENT INFRASTRUCTURE UPGRADES TO ADDRESS POWER OUTAGES

Coleman Wires and Cables Limited has urged the Nigerian government to prioritize the replacement of outdated cables that have surpassed their shelf life, a move the company believes is essential to improving the efficiency of the power distribution system.

In light of the recent power outages affecting the nation, Mr. George Onafowokan, the Managing Director of Coleman Wires and Cables, appealed to Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, to take immediate action regarding the aging infrastructure that has contributed to the frequent collapse of the national grid.

Onafowokan emphasized the critical need to upgrade the existing infrastructure, noting that many cables currently in use are no longer fit for purpose. This deterioration has resulted in repeated grid failures that have severely impacted the manufacturing sector.

He highlighted that these failures have forced manufacturers to resort to expensive alternatives, such as diesel-powered generators, significantly increasing their operational costs. “Manufacturing costs are skyrocketing due to energy costs, making it challenging for businesses to remain viable. Rising diesel prices have further compounded the problem, with many businesses struggling to keep operations running,” Onafowokan stated.

The call for infrastructure upgrades underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive strategy to enhance Nigeria’s power distribution network, ensuring reliability and sustainability for the manufacturing sector and the economy as a whole.

AMAGBA COMMUNITY IN EDO STATE REJECTS POLICE VISIT OVER LAND DISPUTE

The people of Amagba community in the Oredo local government area of Edo State have expressed discontent with the recent visit of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and the Operations Department of the Edo State Command of the Nigerian Police. The community believes the police’s presence was not solely to address unrest following the death of one Israel Ogbeide, as stated by the Force Public Relations Officer, but rather a response to a petition by one Gaius Emokpae, whom they accuse of attempting to seize their land.

In a statement issued by Osazuwa Ogbe on behalf of the community, also known as Amagba 2, the residents alleged that there were attempts to unilaterally rename their village to Oke-Oroma, which they claim is merely a farming camp.

While condemning the murder of Israel Isaac Ogbiede and calling for a thorough investigation, the statement criticized the police for their lack of transparency. “The PRO’s statement should have specified the particular unit of the Edo Operations Department that was working with the IRT that day,” it read, highlighting that the police did not consult the community to understand the underlying causes of the crisis.

The community suspects that some police operatives may have conflicts of interest regarding the land ownership issue and believe they are using the police to take control of the community’s administrative affairs. They noted that the IRT was visibly present when suspected thugs, allegedly loyal to Emokpae, changed the community’s signboard to reflect the new name.

Furthermore, the statement raised concerns about the lack of engagement with the Amagba community regarding the land dispute, stating, “The police did not invite the people of Amagba community to respond to the petition written against them and did not also carry out findings into the actual ownership of the land in dispute from the Oba of Benin palace, who is the customary custodian of all Benin lands in Edo State.”

The community also pointed to the alarming coincidence of the signboard being changed and the murder of Mr. Israel Isaac Ogbiede occurring on the same day, suggesting a coordinated effort. They referenced a viral video showing individuals boasting of their presence and readiness to confront any group, particularly the Okaighele of Amagba 2 community, if they attempted to return to the area.
