Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has extended his condolences to the victims of the Gummi boat tragedy that claimed 13 lives last Sunday in Uban Dawaki Community, Gummi Local Government Area. Represented by Deputy Governor Malam Mani Mummini, Governor Lawal visited the Emir of Gummi, HRH Justice Lawal Hassan, and announced a donation of N20 million to support the affected families.

Describing the incident as “tragic and monumental,” Deputy Governor Mummini expressed the government’s shock and sorrow. He emphasized that the donation aims to alleviate the hardship faced by the victims’ families and demonstrated Governor Lawal’s commitment to providing support.

To prevent future occurrences, the government plans to collaborate with experts to raise awareness about safety measures among boat operators and users. Additionally, the Nigeria Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) will be involved in supplying life jackets at all water transport stations in the state, with their use made compulsory for passengers and operators.

The Emir of Gummi acknowledged the state government’s gesture and welcomed the life jacket initiative. He also corrected reports, confirming that 13 people died, not 40 or 50, and that there were 20 passengers on the boat, not 40.

Governor Lawal’s prompt response underscores his dedication to supporting the victims and enhancing water safety in the state.
