Comrade Preye Harrison, a youth leader in Obuama, Rivers State, has expressed alarm over the recent sightings of unmarked helicopters flying low over the residence of Alhaji Mujahid Abubakr Dokubo-Asari, a prominent Niger Delta leader and close ally of President Bola Tinubu.
Mysterious Sightings Heighten Tensions
Harrison’s concerns were sparked by the appearance of two unmarked helicopters during the local government elections on Saturday, followed by another sighting on Friday. These low-flying helicopters, which reportedly had armed men aboard, have created a climate of fear in the usually peaceful town, which is also home to an army formation.
Community Reaction
Local residents, including 65-year-old Mrs. Blessing Ebenezer, voiced their anxiety over the helicopters, stating, “We are living in fear, not knowing what these helicopters are here for. We can’t sleep at night, thinking something terrible might happen.”
Chief Barr. Opuene, a community leader, echoed these sentiments and called for an investigation into the unusual flights. He stated, “The presence of these unmarked helicopters is unsettling. We urge the authorities to reassure us of our safety.”
Dokubo-Asari’s Influence
Dokubo-Asari, who leads the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force (NDPVF), has been a longstanding advocate for resource control and minority rights in the Niger Delta region. His residence’s prominence in the area adds to the concern surrounding the helicopters’ presence.
Call for Transparency
As tensions escalate, Harrison emphasized that Obuama has always been a peaceful community and demanded transparency regarding the situation. “These mysterious helicopters are causing unnecessary tension. We demand answers,” he said.
Authorities Remain Silent
Despite the growing unease among residents, authorities have yet to offer any explanation for the helicopters’ origin or mission, leaving the town on edge and in a state of uncertainty.
