YORUBA GROUP CALLS FOR PEACEFUL COEXISTENCE AMONG ETHNIC GROUPS IN LAGOS

Must read

The Yoruba Council Worldwide (YCW) has called for peaceful coexistence among the various ethnic groups in Lagos State, particularly emphasizing the need for harmony between Yoruba and Igbo traders at the Ikeja Computer Market.

Oladotun Hassan, President of YCW, made this appeal while addressing journalists at the palace of the Ooni of Ife in Ile-Ife on Wednesday. He urged all parties to avoid actions that could lead to ethnic bigotry or conflicts, stressing the importance of maintaining peace and unity for the collective good of all traders and stakeholders.

Hassan emphasized that the Iyaloja-General of Lagos, Chief Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, as the head of markets in Lagos, deserves respect and recognition. He pointed out that Iyalojas are traditional market heads installed by traditional rulers with specific statutory roles and responsibilities.

Expressing disappointment over recent allegations against groups attempting to disrupt the established market hierarchy, Hassan warned against any attempts to undermine the authority of the Iyaloja. He also advised that any imposition of levies on traders without the approval of the Iyaloja-General should cease immediately.

Hassan called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to establish a commission of inquiry to investigate the alleged disturbances caused by certain groups within the market.

In support of this call for peace, Alhaja Falilat Lawal, the Iyaloja General of Ile-Oodua, urged all ethnic groups in Lagos to continue to live in harmony and to support the leadership of the Iyaloja-General of Lagos.

Meanwhile, the YCW announced that the first Yoruba Obas Summit is scheduled for November 7 at the “Monarch’s Hall” of the Obafemi Elegushi Royal Palace in Lekki, Lagos. The summit will bring together Yoruba Obas to discuss issues related to national development, security, and empowerment for youth and women.
