The Yobe Government has announced plans to return residents of Mafa to their ancestral homes following a Boko Haram attack on September 1, 2024. The state has instructed military and police Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) teams to clear unexploded devices planted by insurgents in the area.

Retired Brig.-Gen. Dahiru Abdulsalam, Security Adviser to Governor Mai Mala Buni, stated that once the area is cleared and deemed safe, residents will be escorted back to Mafa to harvest their crops before fully resettling. The government is also working to secure surrounding areas such as Magumeri, Jimme, and Damasak from insurgent activities with ongoing military operations and aerial surveillance.

The attack resulted in 34 deaths and five injuries. The state security council has emphasized the need for increased efforts in combating insurgency and ensuring stability in the region. Governor Buni is expected to engage with security agency leaders to improve coordination and enhance security measures
