Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has acknowledged the significant role of women in his 2023 election victory. Speaking at the launch of the 774 Explode Project in Makurdi, an initiative promoted by Dr. Mary Alile, the APC National Woman Leader, Governor Alia emphasized his gratitude to the women who supported him and President Bola Tinubu.

Alia reassured women in Benue State of his continued support to help them achieve their goals and realize their potential. He stated that without their massive votes, his victory would not have been possible. He also mentioned that since he did not have a first lady, all the great women of Benue were his first ladies, with Mrs. Tinubu being considered the mother of the state.

The governor committed to ensuring that Benue State would lead in the implementation of the 774 Explode Project. This initiative aims to provide training and skills acquisition for women, who would receive ₦500,000 each as start-up support from the state government.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady, was praised for her support, which has benefitted Benue women through provisions of grains, fertilizer, scholarships, and other resources. During the project’s inauguration, Dr. Alile highlighted the underrepresentation of women in governance, noting that they constitute 49.3% of the population but hold only a small fraction of political positions. She encouraged women to be more active in politics to influence decision-making processes.

Mrs. Christie Ode, wife of the state’s deputy governor, and Mr. Dennis Dzawua, who delivered a keynote address, both emphasized the importance of women’s participation in politics and governance. They noted that supporting each other would help women achieve their deserved political positions.

The project aims to enhance women’s participation in politics beyond Benue State, with women aged 18 to 35 being the primary beneficiaries. Benjamin Omakolo, the Acting Chairman of Benue APC, commended Governor Alia for his achievements, including paying salaries and executing projects without borrowing funds.

Scholastica Ben-Sor, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Women Affairs, affirmed the unwavering support of Benue women for Governor Alia and President Tinubu, pledging their continued loyalty and backing.
