Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has formalized an agreement with two Chinese corporations—China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and China Geo-Engineering Corporation Overseas Construction (CGCOC) Group—to enhance electricity and water infrastructure in the FCT.
This Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in Beijing during President Bola Tinubu’s attendance at the Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). The initiative is part of efforts to restore confidence among Abuja residents through vital infrastructure developments. Wike assured that the projects would be finalized by 2025, coinciding with the FCT’s 50th anniversary.
Electricity Projects: Wike underscored the significance of illuminating Abuja to bring it on par with other world-class cities like Beijing. The project, managed by CCECC, will encompass major areas such as Maitama, Asokoro, Wuse, the Central Business District, and Airport Road extending to Bill Clinton Drive. Meanwhile, the CGCOC Group will oversee electrification in the districts of Mabushi, Katampe, and Garki.
Water Supply Initiatives: Wike also stressed the importance of improving water supply in satellite towns within the FCT, including Gwagwalada, Kwali, and Kuje. The CGCOC Group will be responsible for executing these water supply projects. Additionally, Wike mentioned that the Greater Abuja Water Works project, currently overseen by CGCOC, is 75% complete and expected to be finished by December 2024.
The Chinese companies pledged to deliver high-quality projects within the set timeframe, and Wike expressed his appreciation to President Tinubu for backing the FCT Administration in these critical initiatives.
