The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced a crackdown on beggars in Abuja, citing concerns that the city is becoming a “beggar’s city” and posing security risks.
During the launch of a road construction project from Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway to Judges Quarters in Katampe District, Wike emphasized the need to address the growing visibility of beggars in the capital. He urged citizens to take responsibility for family members who may be begging, stating, “If you know you have a sister, you have a brother who is a beggar on the road; do something, because from next week, we will carry them; we will take them out of the city.”
Wike pointed out that some individuals who appear to be beggars could actually be criminals in disguise. “We will not allow that,” he declared, stressing the urgency of the situation. He issued a public order stating that by the following Monday, authorities would begin removing beggars from the streets, referring to their presence as “embarrassing.”
He further highlighted the connection between begging and potential security threats, stating, “We are fighting insecurity, and people will carry plates begging and might be informants.” Wike’s aim is to ensure a safer environment for residents, asserting that public safety is a priority, even if the decision is met with discontent.
As part of ongoing efforts to combat insecurity in the capital, the minister reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining public order for the well-being of the community.
