WIKE CANCELS CONTROVERSIAL ABUJA ‘PARK & PAY’ POLICY

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has declared the On-street Parking scheme, commonly known as “Park and Pay,” illegal in Abuja. During a live media chat marking his first anniversary in office, Wike announced the immediate termination of the scheme, which had been reintroduced in August last year, just before he assumed office.

Wike criticized the scheme for its unfair revenue-sharing arrangement, where a private consultant received 80 percent of the proceeds, leaving only 20 percent for the FCT Administration. He also recounted a personal experience in which a Senior Advocate of Nigeria informed him about officials attempting to confiscate vehicles under the guise of the Park and Pay scheme.

Emphasizing that the public should be aware there is “nothing called Park and Pay,” Wike urged residents to remain vigilant against illegal operations and continue reporting such issues to the government. He vowed to put an end to similar practices within various secretariats, acknowledging that public intervention brought the illegal policy to his attention.
