Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface will be sidelined for Wednesday’s Champions League match against Brest following a car accident on Sunday.
The Nigerian forward did not participate in training on Tuesday, and reports from German media outlets Bild and Kicker confirmed that he was not on the flight to France later that day.
Boniface was involved in a collision on the autobahn when the car he was traveling in collided with a truck. He shared images on social media showing the wreckage of the vehicle and his injured arm.
Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, stated that while Boniface escaped serious injuries, his participation in the match remains uncertain. “It’s still open at the moment; a situation like this is not easy, and he needs to get over it,” Rolfes said, adding that the club is relieved that the injuries were not severe.
Boniface has been in impressive form this season, scoring seven goals in 10 matches across all competitions. His likely replacement, Czech forward Patrik Schick, has struggled for goals, netting just once in eight games.
