Vice President Kashim Shettima has emphasized that an ethical and morally upright society is crucial for attracting investors and fostering economic development.
Shettima made this statement through Bashir Maidugu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Legal and Compliance Matters, during a webinar titled “Let’s Talk Ethics” held on Tuesday in Abuja.
The theme of the webinar was “Community Engagement for Ethical Transformation, Leadership and Integrity,” and it was organized by the Civil Society for Ethics and Values Development Initiative (CSEVDI) in honor of the Independence Day anniversary.
He highlighted the need for moral integrity, stating that a nation’s morals are akin to teeth: “the more decayed they are, the more it hurts to touch them.”
Shettima noted that President Bola Tinubu has a robust agenda for national growth, asserting that the Renewed Hope Agenda could not be effective without genuine ethical transformation, authentic leadership, and unwavering integrity at all levels.
He emphasized the urgent need for a reorientation of Nigeria and its citizens regarding the values necessary for the country to progress.
“I commend the organizers of this webinar because ensuring that ethics and morals are instilled in ourselves and our youth is a collective responsibility for all Nigerians—as mothers, parents, and teachers—so that we can create a better society,” he said.
He concluded by stressing that without a morally and ethically sound society, positive economic growth would be unattainable, and investors would be reluctant to invest in such an environment.
