Vice President Kashim Shettima officially inaugurated a $115 million upgrade project at the West Africa Container Terminal (WACT) in Onne, Rivers State, on Wednesday. This significant investment reinforces APM Terminals’ commitment to Nigeria’s economic growth and strengthens its role as a major trade hub in West Africa.
The upgrade highlights APM Terminals’ dedication to enhancing global trade and creating new opportunities for communities across Nigeria and the region. The inauguration ceremony was graced by several dignitaries, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, represented by Professor Babatunde Bolaji Bernard, Senior Adviser (Technical); Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Olufemi Oloruntola; Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi; and the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), represented by Executive Director of Marine and Operations, Engr. Olalekan Badmus.
The Vice President, represented by Musaddiq Mustapha, Personal Assistant to the President on Subnational Infrastructure (Office of the Vice President), praised APM Terminals for its substantial investment in WACT and assured that the Federal Government will continue to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive. He noted that the $115 million investment in the WACT upgrade will enhance service delivery at the port and attract more vessels.

APM Terminals’ investment in WACT is a clear sign of the company’s strong commitment to developing ports that are a lifeline to global trade,” the Vice President stated. He further emphasized that Nigeria will continue its collaboration with APM Terminals to ensure a thriving environment for businesses engaged in global trade.
The comprehensive upgrade project is a testament to APM Terminals’ vision of enhancing efficiency, reliability, and local excellence in Nigeria. The project includes extensive yard expansion, the acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment, and the construction of a modern office complex. The introduction of new Mobile Harbour Cranes (MHC), Rubber Tyre Gantries (RTG), and advanced Cargo Handling Equipment (CHE) is expected to significantly reduce turnaround times, setting new standards in service delivery at the quay, yard, and gate.
