The US Secret Service defended its actions on Monday after a gunman managed to lie in wait for former President Donald Trump. The suspect, who had an assault-style rifle, was apprehended before he could fire any shots. The Secret Service emphasized that it provided the “highest level” of protection for Trump.
The incident, which occurred while Trump was playing golf in Florida, has intensified fears of election-related violence. The suspect, 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, was arrested after being spotted at the edge of Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach. The FBI believes Routh spent nearly 12 hours around the perimeter of the course based on cell phone records.
Trump has politicized the event, blaming his election rival Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden for the scare, citing their “rhetoric” about him endangering democracy. Both Biden and Harris have condemned the assassination attempt, with Biden also expressing relief at Trump’s safety and having a cordial conversation with him.
Routh, who appeared in court on Monday, faces charges of illegal firearms possession and appeared calm during the proceedings. The Secret Service reported that the suspect did not fire any shots and surrendered without resistance.
