Prof. Jonah Onuoha, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, has endorsed Senator Orji Uzor Kalu’s proposal for a part-time legislature in Nigeria. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Onuoha praised the idea as a beneficial step towards reducing the cost of governance and improving legislative effectiveness.
Onuoha highlighted that the current high cost of governance in Nigeria makes Kalu’s proposal timely and relevant. He believes that a part-time legislature would not only decrease expenses but also allow legislators more time to prepare and contribute meaningfully to the legislative process.
He commended Kalu for his patriotism and commitment to national development, noting that the proposal reflects a genuine concern for the country’s well-being rather than personal gain. Onuoha also pointed out that many Western countries operate with part-time legislatures, which contributes to lower governance costs and less electoral violence.
Overall, Onuoha supports the idea of amending the constitution to accommodate a part-time legislature, viewing it as a way to ensure more effective and less costly governance.
