The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has praised the Federal Government of Nigeria for its commendable handling of refugees. Raouf Mazou, UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner for Operations, and his delegation conveyed this recognition during a meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa.

Mazou highlighted Nigeria’s generous reception of refugees, particularly from Cameroon, and noted the crucial role of host communities in facilitating their resettlement. He also mentioned that the UNHCR would work to access World Bank facilities to further support Nigeria’s efforts, focusing on transitioning from humanitarian aid to development and self-reliance for refugees.

The UNHCR aims to shift towards sustainable solutions, reducing dependency on aid and aiding reintegration for those returning to their home countries. Mazou emphasized the importance of this new approach, which includes leveraging private sector resources through the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation.

Ms. Ruvendrini Menikdiwela, UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner for Protection, praised Nigeria’s adherence to international refugee conventions and encouraged other countries to follow Nigeria’s example.

Vice President Shettima reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing the needs of displaced persons and collaborating with stakeholders to enhance their well-being. He expressed gratitude for the UN’s support and emphasized the importance of sustainable resettlement practices to prevent donor fatigue.

Shettima also acknowledged ongoing efforts by President Tinubu’s administration to address national challenges and diversify the economy.
