The United Nations has announced a $6 million donation to support flood victims in Maiduguri, Borno State. This aid follows the recent overflow of the Alau Dam, which displaced thousands of residents who were already affected by conflict and insecurity.

In a statement, UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohammed Fall, revealed that a joint team from UN agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and the Nigerian Red Cross Society had visited the affected areas.

“We met people who have been displaced multiple times, and this flood has added to their hardship,” Fall said.

The UN and its partners are providing immediate relief, including hot meals and airlifting food to areas cut off by the floodwaters. They are also distributing water purification tablets, hygiene services, and emergency health and shelter support to prevent disease outbreaks.

The flood has severely damaged local agriculture, affecting over 125,000 hectares of farmland. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is seeking additional funds for continued support, aiming to alleviate the immediate suffering of the displaced and prevent further health crises.
