UK’S TUC REACTS TO DSS ARREST OF NLC PRESIDENT AJAERO

< 1 mn read

The UK Trade Union Congress (TUC) has expressed strong disapproval of the recent arrest of Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Nigeria. The TUC described the arrest as blatant intimidation and a severe violation of trade union rights, particularly the right to seek international solidarity.

Ajaero, who was detained on his way to deliver a speech to the UK TUC, was released last night, but concerns persist regarding his safety and the ongoing harassment of labour leaders in Nigeria. The UK TUC condemned the Nigerian government’s actions, calling for an immediate end to the persecution of Ajaero and other NLC leaders.

The TUC’s statement highlights the growing global support for the Nigerian labour movement as tensions between the NLC and the government continue to escalate. The UK body affirmed its solidarity with Nigeria’s trade unions, demanding that the Nigerian government cease its harassment of Ajaero and respect fundamental trade union freedoms.
