The Trinitarian Foundation for Orphanage and Helps in Ebonyi has highlighted two major challenges confronting the home: a lack of accommodation and persistent flooding of its premises. The operator of the orphanage, Rev. Sis. Nkechi Nwosu, made an urgent appeal for assistance from Governor Francis Nwifuru during a visit by the state Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) as part of the activities for the 2024 Press Week.
Nwosu emphasized the pressing need for more accommodation due to the increasing number of inmates, stating that the home currently houses at least 26 children and five social workers. She mentioned that the facility can no longer accommodate the growing number of children in need of assistance and receives frequent requests for admission.
Another operator, Rev. Mother Mary-Agnes Onyejeli, lamented the impact of flooding on the premises, which often displaces the inmates during the rainy season. She called for urgent government intervention to provide adequate accommodation and a lasting solution to the flooding issue.
Additionally, John Lekpa, President of the Society of St. Vincent De Paul Old Peoples and Destitute Home in Abakaliki, appealed for the inclusion of the orphanage in the state government’s ongoing empowerment programs.
The state Chairman of the NUJ, Samson Nwafor, stated that the union aimed to support the less privileged during its press week. During the visit, the council donated essential items, including bags of rice, detergents, cartons of tomato paste, and tissue papers, to the orphanage.
