The Nigerian community in the United Kingdom is in mourning following the untimely death of Mrs. Olubunmi Okeniyi, who passed away on October 13, 2024, just weeks after relocating to Sunderland with her two children to join her husband, Mr. Jacob Okeniyi.

Mrs. Okeniyi’s death has raised alarms within the community, as it follows a concerning pattern of fatalities among Nigerians shortly after their arrival in the UK. Community members are deeply saddened, with many expressing grief over the increasing number of such incidents.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist with her burial expenses, emphasizing the urgent need for financial support. The message states, “With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Mrs. Olubunmi Okeniyi, who tragically passed away on 13/10/24, at 4:30 PM in Sunderland, UK. She is survived by her husband, Mr. Jacob Okeniyi, and we urgently seek donations to support her immediate burial, as her husband cannot afford the costs. Any contribution, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated during this difficult time.”

Community member Godwin Ejeh revealed that the 49-year-old had been battling breast cancer prior to her move to the UK. After arriving, she began treatment, but her prognosis was poor, leading doctors to recommend palliative care, which was provided at home with the assistance of visiting medical professionals.

On the day of her death, Mrs. Okeniyi required help to use the restroom. After being assisted by her husband and children, her condition unexpectedly deteriorated. Caregivers, who had just left, were called back but arrived too late to provide assistance.

As of Wednesday evening, the GoFundMe campaign has raised £5,800, with £3,557 contributed through the platform, highlighting the community’s willingness to support the grieving family during this challenging time.
