Tom Makolo, an up-and-coming actor in the Asaba-based Nollywood scene, has made impressive strides in his career, starring in 30 films within just eight months. After relocating to Asaba in November 2023, Makolo discovered a wealth of opportunities in Nollywood’s vibrant regional hub, often referred to as “Asabawood.”

EARLY STRUGGLES IN LAGOS

Makolo’s journey began in 2004 when he founded The Sensational Theatre Group in Ayingba, Kogi State. In 2005, he moved to Lagos with dreams of breaking into Nollywood. However, his experience was marked by disappointment as he encountered scams and unfulfilled promises. Despite attending numerous auditions and paying for roles that never materialized, Makolo’s efforts in Lagos yielded little success, prompting him to return to Kogi after six months.

RISE IN ASABAWOOD

A year ago, Makolo moved to Asaba, where the film industry thrives under the control of marketers who double as producers. Unlike Lagos, where media coverage and sponsorships dominate, Asabawood operates on a different model, offering actors more frequent opportunities. Since his move, Makolo has been featured in at least 30 films, a significant increase from his time in Lagos, where he struggled to secure roles.

CHALLENGES AND REWARDS

Despite the demanding schedule, Makolo views the increased workload as beneficial for his exposure and growth as an actor. He acknowledges the burnout that can accompany such a hectic pace but understands it as a necessary part of the journey for emerging actors like himself.

In Asabawood, actor compensation varies widely. While A-list actors can earn ₦1.5 million per film, Makolo, as an up-and-coming actor, earns between ₦100,000 to ₦150,000 per movie. For him, the pay is satisfactory, considering the consistent work and the opportunities for further growth.

LOOKING FORWARD

Makolo’s experience reflects the realities of the Nigerian film industry, particularly in Asaba, where the focus remains on quantity and quick turnaround. However, Makolo remains optimistic, viewing each project as a stepping stone toward greater success in the evolving Nollywood landscape.
