President Bola Tinubu has urged creditors and multilateral financial institutions to consider debt forgiveness for Nigeria and other developing countries. Speaking during the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, called for reforms in the global financial system.

Tinubu stressed the need for a transparent multilateral trading system and reforms that would help address the challenges faced by developing and least-developed nations. He noted that the global debt burden is hampering the ability of countries to meet their citizens’ needs and urged for comprehensive debt relief measures to support sustainable development.

He further highlighted the negative impact of trade barriers and protectionist policies, which he said discourage motivation and limit global investments. Tinubu also called for the recovery of proceeds from corruption and illicit financial flows, urging international cooperation to return stolen assets to their countries of origin, in line with the United Nations Convention against Corruption.
