For many, hanging up the boots is permanent, while others return for the love of the game or to fill gaps in a team. Here are five players who made a comeback for one final dance:

WOJCIECH SZCZESNY
In August 2024, Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny retired, but Barcelona convinced him to sign a one-year contract in October after Marc Andre ter Stegen’s season-ending injury.

ARJEN ROBBEN
Bayern Munich’s legendary winger Arjen Robben retired in 2019, but fans saw him in action again in 2021 with Dutch side Groningen. Unfortunately, an injury ended his return, forcing him to retire for good.

PETR CECH
Chelsea’s greatest goalkeeper, Petr Cech, retired in 2019 but was listed for the 2020/21 Premier League season after a squad emergency. He made a brief return with Chelsea’s U-23 team before retiring again.

PAUL SCHOLES
Paul Scholes retired in 2011 but surprised everyone by returning in 2012 to help Manchester United win the Premier League. He made 21 appearances that season before retiring permanently.

JOHAN CRUYFF
Dutch legend Johan Cruyff retired in 1978 but returned months later with the Los Angeles Aztecs after financial troubles. He later played for Washington Diplomats, Levante, and Ajax, before ending his career with Feyenoord in 1983.
