Filmmakers in Nollywood are increasingly turning to cultural heritage, bringing indigenous languages and traditions to the big screen, and pushing Nollywood into new creative realms.

In recent years, Nollywood has experienced a shift towards incorporating indigenous languages and cultural themes, reviving traditional storytelling methods. This change comes after a period where epic films and traditional narratives were overshadowed by contemporary genres.

Streaming platforms like Netflix and Prime Video have significantly contributed to this revival by providing a global stage for Nigerian filmmakers. This exposure has allowed traditional films to reach wider audiences and compete internationally, fostering cultural exchange.

A notable example of this resurgence is Kunle Afolayan’s Anikulapo series. Released in 2022, the series combines cultural authenticity with global appeal, garnering 8.73 million views in its first week. The sequel, Anikulapo: Rise of the Sceptre, continues this successful blend of traditional themes and modern storytelling.

Another prominent film in this revival is Bolanle Austen-Peters’ House of Ga’a. The film, which explores the Oyo Empire’s pre-colonial political system, quickly rose to the top of Netflix’s most-watched films chart. Its cinematic quality and engaging narrative have been widely praised.

Adding to this momentum, Netflix has announced the upcoming premiere of Lisabi: The Uprising on September 27, 2024, with its sequel, Lisabi: A Legend is Born, slated for January 2025. These films will spotlight the legendary Yoruba hero, Lisabi, and are expected to captivate audiences with their compelling stories and high production values.

This revival of epic films in Nollywood highlights a growing appreciation for Nigerian cultural heritage and storytelling, enriching the entertainment landscape and preserving indigenous narratives for both local and international audiences.
