THE OKPAI POWER PLANT: A CALL FOR COLLABORATION, NOT CONFLICT

The Okpai Power Plant in Delta State has recently become a focal point of debate, especially following Senator Ned Nwoko’s calls for its completion. While his passion for the project is understandable, it’s important to clarify the ownership and governance of this significant infrastructure.

The Okpai Power Plant is a joint venture involving the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC), and other multinational partners, with the Federal Government holding a considerable stake. This arrangement makes it a national asset, rather than a state initiative under Delta’s purview.

Senator Nwoko’s criticisms of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori regarding the plant’s completion are misplaced, as the state government lacks direct control over the project. Governor Oborevwori, a Justice of the Peace, has demonstrated commendable leadership and financial prudence since taking office, ensuring equitable development across all three senatorial districts—Delta Central, Delta North, and Delta South.

The governor’s approach, including the Warri Stadium project aimed at boosting local employment and sports, reflects his commitment to comprehensive development, not favoritism toward any one region. Senator Nwoko’s attempts to dictate state governance are unfounded; constructive criticism should be respectful and informed.

Moreover, the completion of the Okpai Power Plant is fundamentally a Federal Government responsibility. Instead of dragging the Delta State Government into this phase, Senator Nwoko should leverage his position to facilitate dialogue between the federal authorities and project stakeholders. The ongoing investigation by the House of Representatives into the project’s abandonment highlights the urgency for collaboration rather than conflict.

Ultimately, the completion of the Okpai Power Plant requires a unified effort among stakeholders, respecting the established ownership structure while focusing on resolving the challenges hindering its progress. Deltans deserve a concerted approach that promotes development across all regions, rather than divisive politics.
