The media office of former Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has claimed that officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) attempted to arrest him on Wednesday night at the Kogi Government Lodge in Asokoro. According to a statement by the ex-governor’s Media Director, Ohiare Michael, the operatives fired gunshots into the air in an effort to carry out the arrest.
The statement detailed that earlier in the day, Yahaya Bello had voluntarily visited the EFCC office but was asked to leave and return at a later time. Hours later, the EFCC reportedly launched a sudden raid at the government facility.
Ohiare condemned the EFCC’s actions, accusing the agency of engaging in political intimidation rather than focusing on its anti-corruption mandate. He also warned that the EFCC would be held responsible for any harm that comes to the former governor, stressing that the incident seemed to go beyond mere corruption allegations. The media team promised to update the public as the situation develops.
