Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu has strongly rejected the notion of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, taking on a vice presidential role in the 2027 elections.

In a viral video released on September 16, Yesufu expressed her intent to campaign against Obi if he were to become vice president under another candidate. She questioned the repeated trend of expecting the most capable individuals to settle for secondary roles, asking, “Why must we always ask the most capable to be second in line?”

This reaction comes after recent reports that Obi had shown willingness to serve as vice president if presented with the opportunity to work alongside a more qualified candidate. Obi had previously indicated openness to collaborating with other politicians, such as Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to enhance Nigeria’s development.

“I’m ready to collaborate with anyone focused on improving the lives of Nigerians. If that means being a vice president to someone who can do the job better, I’m open to it,” Obi had stated.

However, Obi clarified these statements on his official X account on Saturday, denying any intention to pursue the vice presidency. He emphasized that his focus remains on addressing immediate issues like hunger and insecurity, not on future elections.

This exchange highlights the growing tensions and varying perspectives within Nigeria’s political landscape as the country prepares for the 2027 elections.
