TENSION RISES IN NIGERIA’S UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY AMID ASUU MEETING

< 1 mn read

Tension is mounting within Nigeria’s university community as the national leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) prepares to meet in Abuja today. The union is expected to deliver a “State of the Nation” address, raising concerns among students about the potential for an impending strike.

This meeting follows ASUU’s issuance of a fresh 14-day pre-strike notice to the federal government, which has further fueled uncertainty regarding academic continuity. The ultimatum comes just one week after a previous 21-day notice was issued on August 18, demanding the government address the union’s longstanding grievances.

ASUU’s key demands include the review and signing of the renegotiated 2009 agreement with the federal government, the establishment of a revitalization fund for public universities, the payment of outstanding earned academic allowances, and the release of withheld salaries. Additionally, the union is advocating for the resolution of promotion arrears, third-party deductions affecting its members, and the cessation of illegal recruitment practices, as well as addressing the proliferation of public universities and the abuse of university laws.

The outcome of today’s meeting could significantly impact the future of public university education in Nigeria, with many students and stakeholders eagerly awaiting the union’s next move.
