On Thursday, Team Delta emerged victorious at the 8th National Youths Games held in Asaba, Delta, despite widespread allegations of age cheating. The defending champions secured a total of 41 gold, 27 silver, and 30 bronze medals.

The event, which lasted for 11 days, faced criticism from sports writers and administrators who were dismayed by the organization and outcome. Dr. Daniel Igali, President of the Wrestling Federation of Nigeria (WFN), highlighted age cheating as a significant issue undermining grassroots sports development. He emphasized the need to eradicate this practice to restore credibility to youth tournaments and improve Nigeria’s performance in international events.

Igali criticized the tournament’s current state, noting that the screening process has been compromised, turning the games into a contest for the highest bidder. He stressed the importance of the youth games for sports development in Nigeria.

Mr. Obioma George, Director of Sports at the Abia Sports Council, also voiced disappointment with the event’s management. While congratulating Delta for hosting the tournament, he urged a thorough review of the athlete screening process.
