Taiwo Awoniyi, the Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest FC striker, has expressed his desire for the team to make a powerful start at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. He believes the Eagles are well-equipped to excel and surpass expectations after their qualification for the tournament.
Awoniyi shared his thoughts in a phone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) ahead of the 2025 AFCON qualifier against the Cheetahs of Benin Republic, scheduled for Saturday in Uyo.
“For us, playing for the Super Eagles is a significant event. I believe we have the capability to win every game in Africa. It’s about coming together and playing with national pride,” Awoniyi stated.
He returns to the Super Eagles after a period of absence due to an injury sustained during Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Lesotho in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier. Awoniyi expressed his enthusiasm about his return and his belief that all players called up deserve a starting position.
“It’s a great privilege to play for the Super Eagles, and everyone called up is excited. I trust that each player will give their best for the country,” he remarked.
Regarding his club situation, Awoniyi mentioned that his injury had impacted his regular starting position. However, he is currently playing consistently and is hopeful for more opportunities.
“We have many talented players, and everyone deserves a spot in the team,” Awoniyi added.
NAN reports that the Super Eagles will also face Rwanda on September 10 in another AFCON qualifying match in Kigali.
