Spotify, the leading online streaming platform, marked the 10th anniversary of Wizkid’s iconic single “Ojuelegba” on Tuesday. Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, announced that the song has surpassed 55 million streams since its release in 2014.
Okumu highlighted the impact of “Ojuelegba” in a statement from Lagos, noting that Spotify has produced a special anniversary film to commemorate the milestone, showcasing the song’s influence and journey.
“Today we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Wizkid’s groundbreaking track, ‘Ojuelegba,’ a song that has played a crucial role in the global rise of Afrobeats and continues to resonate with millions worldwide,” said Okumu.
Since its debut, “Ojuelegba” achieved significant streaming milestones, including reaching one million streams by August 2015 and surpassing 10 million by January 2018. By April 2024, it had accumulated over 55 million streams on Spotify, underscoring the global expansion of Afrobeats.
The song’s popularity spans various regions, with the United States, United Kingdom, France, Nigeria, and the Netherlands being the top five countries streaming it. Lagos emerged as the city with the highest streams, particularly in August.
“Ojuelegba” pays tribute to the popular neighborhood in Lagos, reflecting its cultural significance and Wizkid’s lasting impact as one of Africa’s foremost artists.
