SOWORE INSISTS ON OCTOBER 1 PEACEFUL PROTEST DESPITE INTIMIDATION

With less than 24 hours to the October 1 nationwide peaceful protest, Omoyele Sowore, a leading organizer and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), affirmed that the protest will proceed as planned. He emphasized that the purpose of the protest is not to seek dialogue with the government at Aso Rock but to demand the fulfillment of specific needs and rights.

In a statement to Vanguard, Sowore stressed that the movement aims to combat tyranny within the democratic system, asserting, “The protest has always made a difference; it has always defeated tyranny and oppression.” He specified that the demonstration is scheduled to take place at Eagle Square in Abuja.

Sowore reiterated that the protesters are not looking for conversations with the government but are committed to change, stating, “We are only ready for change, not monologue.” He also clarified that the ultimatum for their demands to be addressed is set for tomorrow, October 1, 2024.

He explained that the choice of October 1 is significant, as it marks Nigeria’s Independence Day, originally celebrated in 1960. “This protest questions the Independence of 1960 and now seeks a new independence from internal colonizers,” he noted.

Despite potential government intimidation, Sowore expressed confidence in the resolve of the protesters, declaring, “It doesn’t matter to us; we expect the worst, but we know the people would win ultimately.”
