An unidentified soldier has been implicated in the stabbing death of Police Inspector Saka Ganiyu at the Ojo axis of Lagos State, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). The incident occurred on October 9, 2024, around 6:30 AM at Volks Bus Stop on Lagos-Badagry Road.
Ganiyu, who was part of a Lagos State task force, was conducting a lawful enforcement operation when a T4 Volkswagen commercial bus, driven against traffic, came into conflict with his team. The driver claimed to be a soldier, which led to a heated altercation.
During the confrontation, the soldier summoned fellow soldiers from the nearby Ojo Army Barracks, who arrived armed and engaged the police team. Reinforcements were called for, and more police were dispatched to the scene. Unfortunately, Ganiyu sustained serious injuries during the altercation and was transported to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, where he later died.
The police command has initiated an investigation into the incident, and Ganiyu’s body has been taken to a mortuary for an autopsy. The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army has also confirmed the incident and stated that a soldier suspected of involvement has been apprehended and is under military police investigation.
Lt.-Col. Olabisi Ayeni, Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, expressed regret over the incident and reiterated the army’s commitment to upholding the Nigerian Army Code of Conduct. He emphasized the need for cooperation between military and police forces to maintain public trust and security.
