Iconic American singer Mariah Carey has revealed the tragic deaths of her mother, Patricia, and her sister, Alison, over the past weekend.
In a statement to People Magazine on August 26, 2024, Carey expressed her profound sadness, saying, “My heart is broken that I lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day. I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed.”
Carey did not disclose the causes of their deaths and has requested privacy during this difficult time. She added, “I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”
In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the singer described her complex relationship with her mother as a “prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment.” She wrote, “Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities.”
Patricia, a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach, was previously married to Alfred Roy Carey. The couple had Mariah and Alison before divorcing when Mariah was three years old.
Fans have been flooding Carey’s Instagram with condolences and messages of support as she navigates this challenging period.
