Philip Shaibu, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, has publicly ridiculed his boss, Governor Godwin Obaseki, in light of the recent governorship election results in the state. Shaibu expressed his feelings of vindication after Obaseki lost his local government area to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Shaibu made these remarks during an interview with Arise TV on Monday, September 23, 2024. He emphasized that Obaseki has never won an election independently and claimed that he played a crucial role in the governor’s previous political successes.

“I feel vindicated; even the governor couldn’t win his local government. I won my unit, ward, and local government. Where are the governor’s results? He has never won; we always assisted him,” Shaibu stated.

Moreover, Shaibu, who had threatened to oppose the candidate endorsed by Obaseki prior to the election, urged the governor to apologize to the people of Edo State. “What is left now is for him to go back and start begging and apologizing to the people of Edo State, and he has a lot of them that he needs to go and apologize to,” he added.

In the recently concluded election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Senator Monday Okpebholo of the APC the winner on September 22, 2024. Okpebholo secured 291,667 votes, defeating Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who received 247,274 votes. Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party finished third with 22,763 votes.
