The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, has confirmed that his office, in collaboration with the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, is actively implementing the presidential directive on the merger and dissolution of certain ministries, issued on Wednesday.

In a statement released from Abuja, Akume outlined the key steps for this process, emphasizing that all handover procedures must be completed by October 30, 2024. Outgoing ministers are required to transfer responsibilities to their respective Permanent Secretaries where there are no incoming ministers.

The ministries undergoing restructuring include:

  • The Ministry of Tourism, which will be merged with the Ministry of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy.
  • The Ministry of Sports Development, which is set to be wound down.

These changes are being coordinated by the Offices of the SGF and the Head of Civil Service to ensure a smooth transition. Akume also noted that the Ministry of Niger Delta Development has been renamed and its mandate expanded, with supervising authorities and relevant commissions already notified of the new structure.

Permanent Secretaries have been instructed to oversee the seamless execution of these directives and forward copies of their handover notes to the SGF’s office for record-keeping.
