With the review of the 1999 Constitution underway by both the Senate and the House of Representatives, Senator Ned Nwoko, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Reparation and Repatriation, is actively advocating for the creation of Anioma State.

In an interview with Vanguard after a retreat focused on constitutional amendments, Senator Nwoko expressed his intent to rally support from his colleagues in both chambers, the people of Delta State, and other Nigerians for the establishment of Anioma State.

As the review process progresses, Nwoko remains hopeful and committed to ensuring that Anioma, along with other underrepresented regions, receives equitable consideration and opportunities for development. He appealed to Nigerians to join him in realizing this goal, emphasizing the need for unity and optimism in the pursuit of a Nigeria that reflects the aspirations of all citizens.

Addressing concerns about the viability of new states, particularly Anioma, Nwoko asserted that the proposed state has the economic and social potential to thrive. He pointed out that six out of the nine local governments in the proposed state are oil and gas-producing areas, which enhances its sustainability. Additionally, Asaba is home to a burgeoning movie industry, and Anioma is recognized for its leadership in sports, hosting the first Sports University in Nigeria.

Senator Nwoko stated, “As a distinguished member of the Nigerian Senate, I am immensely optimistic as the review process for the 1999 Constitution officially begins with the recently concluded retreat in Kano.” He noted the presence of key figures at the retreat, including Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau and Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele.

During the retreat, the Special Senate Committee for the Review of the 1999 Constitution reviewed various materials, including bills that reflect the diverse interests of Nigerians and memorandums submitted for consideration. “These discussions represent a critical step forward in our shared commitment to bettering our nation,” he said.

Nwoko highlighted that while the retreat has concluded, the deliberations will continue, with each senator bearing the responsibility of advocating for the concerns and aspirations of their respective constituencies.
