Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, has expressed grave concerns about Nigeria’s current socio-political situation, describing the nation as on the brink of failure. He urged citizens to pray for the country, noting that the struggles faced by the masses are intensifying. Secondus pointed out that the pump price of petrol has skyrocketed to N1,100, with reports of prices reaching N1,200 in some areas, further exacerbating the hardships endured by many Nigerians.
Addressing the ongoing crisis within the PDP, particularly in Rivers State, Secondus labeled the discord as unnecessary, suggesting that it could have been avoided if party members had fulfilled their roles effectively. He emphasized that there cannot be two leaders within the party, affirming that Governor Siminalaye Fubara is the rightful leader of the PDP in Rivers and deserves the respect of all members. “There are no two captains in a ship. Governor Fubara is our governor and the leader of our state,” he stated, expressing optimism that the internal issues within the party would soon be resolved.
In a veiled reference to dissenting members of the party, particularly those led by Chief Nyesom Wike, Secondus urged them to acknowledge Fubara’s leadership. He called for a reduction in tensions to foster progress in the state, stating, “I feel very pained about the state because business and investors are running away. They should tone it down.”
Secondus also advocated for judicial reforms to safeguard Nigeria’s fragile democracy, underscoring the judiciary’s critical role in government and the necessity for it to function effectively. “We all are looking for improvement and reform in the judiciary,” he concluded, emphasizing the importance of a strong judicial system in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy
