The Rivers State Police Command has clarified its recent deployment of operatives to the State Electoral Commission (SIEC) office, asserting that the action was taken to thwart an attempted arson attack by hoodlums. Superintendent Grace Iringe-Koko, the Public Relations Officer, stated that the police acted on credible intelligence reports indicating that individuals planned to set the RSIEC office ablaze.
The police deployed personnel to secure the RSIEC facility on Thursday night after receiving information about the potential threat. Initially, officers from the State Government House were stationed at the location but were withdrawn following a court order prohibiting police involvement in the electoral process.
In response to claims made by Governor Siminalaiyi Fubara that police officers were attempting to seize sensitive electoral materials from the RSIEC office, Iringe-Koko stated, “Our deployment was a response to credible intelligence on planned arson attacks.”
Iringe-Koko reiterated the Rivers State Police Command’s dedication to maintaining peace and order during the election period. She emphasized that police personnel would not engage in the electoral process, urging residents to adhere to the law.
The Rivers State Police Command’s response underscores its proactive approach to ensuring public safety amidst allegations and concerns surrounding the upcoming Local Government elections. The emphasis on intelligence-led deployment highlights the police’s focus on preventing violence and maintaining order in the state.
