Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara has accused the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, of bias and interference in the state’s upcoming local government elections. Fubara, speaking after a visit to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) on Thursday night, expressed frustration over alleged police actions aimed at obstructing the electoral process.
In a strongly-worded statement, Fubara criticized what he described as undue interference from the police, stating that despite a court ruling, nothing has been legally mandated to prevent the elections from taking place. He questioned the relationship between the IGP and an unnamed powerful individual in the state, implying that the police are acting in alignment with external influences.
Addressing concerns about security, Fubara insisted that the state is prepared to provide its own security if necessary, referencing a similar situation in Anambra State where elections proceeded without federal police involvement. He emphasized that the election will go ahead, stating, “The election will be held, results will be declared, and people will be sworn in.”
Fubara concluded by affirming that the only way the election could be stopped is if he were physically harmed, underscoring his determination to ensure that the electoral process moves forward.
