The Rivers State Government has reported the detection of two Mpox cases within the state and has activated its Public Health Emergency Operations Centre to manage the situation.
HEALTH COMMISSIONER CONFIRMS CASES
Dr. Adaeze Chidinma Oreh, the Commissioner for Health, confirmed the Mpox cases during a press conference in Port Harcourt on Tuesday. She stated that Rivers State’s health authorities have been on high alert to address any further emergencies related to the infection.
STATE’S RESPONSE AND MEASURES
Oreh noted that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has confirmed a total of 39 Mpox cases nationwide. Rivers State, with its two confirmed cases, has mobilized medical teams to respond across all healthcare facilities, including general and specialist hospitals.
The state government has implemented an incident plan for Mpox and allocated resources to track and manage all cases. Additionally, ad hoc staff have been trained to effectively combat the infection at all levels of the healthcare system.
UNDERSTANDING MPOX
Mpox, caused by the monkeypox virus, is primarily transmitted through close contact between individuals but can also spread from contaminated surfaces. The state is focused on preventing further spread and ensuring that its healthcare response is robust and effective.
