The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has condemned attempts to impeach Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, describing the move as a calculated effort to destabilize the state and undermine the people’s mandate. The council’s Eastern Zone chairman, Prince Sukubo, expressed concerns during a press conference in Port Harcourt, stressing that some individuals were exploiting recent Supreme Court rulings to create political chaos.

Key points from Sukubo’s statement include:

  • Impeachment Efforts: Sukubo highlighted a specific 48-hour ultimatum demanding Governor Fubara to re-present the 2025 budget, which he argued was part of a strategy to destabilize the state and set the stage for impeachment.
  • Defense of Mandate: The IYC chairman warned that any attempt to remove Fubara would be an attack on the will of the people, pointing out that the governor was elected freely and fairly by the electorate, particularly from the Ijaw community. He reiterated that the people of Rivers State would defend their right to choose their leadership.
  • Call for Cooperation: Sukubo called for all stakeholders in the state to prioritize dialogue and cooperation rather than conflict, urging them to work towards peace and stability.
  • Impact on the State: The IYC chairman also warned that withholding federal allocations from Rivers State would worsen the plight of workers and slow down development efforts, adding unnecessary hardship for the citizens.

The IYC’s stance is firm in defending Governor Fubara’s mandate and ensuring that any efforts to destabilize the state or undermine democratic leadership are resisted. They stress that the future of the state should not be jeopardized by the ambitions of a few individuals.
