Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister-elect, has pledged to start a period of “national renewal” in the UK following the Labour Party’s victory in the general election on July 5, 2024. Labour crossed the 325-seat threshold needed for a working majority in the House of Commons, with projections indicating a majority of 166 seats.
Rishi Sunak, the outgoing Prime Minister, congratulated Starmer and apologized to his party members and supporters, taking responsibility for the defeat. The Conservative Party experienced its worst result in history, losing over 170 seats and being left with only 136 MPs.
In his victory speech in Central London, Starmer emphasized the responsibility that comes with the mandate and expressed his commitment to begin the work of change and rebuilding the country.
