President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians living abroad to return home and contribute to the nation’s development. Speaking at the 2024 National Diaspora Day Celebrations on July 25, 2024, Tinubu, represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, emphasized the value of bringing back expertise gained abroad to support Nigeria’s development agenda.

Tinubu shared his personal experience of studying and working in the United States before returning to Nigeria, urging others to do the same. He acknowledged the challenges of migration but stressed that there is no place like home and encouraged returning Nigerians to use their skills for national growth.

While he did not condemn the mass exodus known as the “japa phenomenon,” Tinubu noted its implications for the country’s development and urged those abroad to remain connected to their homeland. He highlighted the significant impact of diaspora remittances, which totaled $646 million from January to May 2024, with a notable increase in May.

The President’s remarks aim to inspire Nigerians in the diaspora to leverage their experiences and resources for the benefit of Nigeria while maintaining strong ties with their country of origin.
