Residents of Ovom Street, Ogbor Hill in Aba, Abia State, have issued an urgent SOS to the state government, requesting immediate reconstruction of the Ovom Street erosion site, which is endangering lives and property.
The gully erosion, extending over 200 meters, has caused significant damage, destroying structures and displacing three compounds and three two-storey buildings.
In response to the worsening situation, the state government declared the erosion site an endangered area in October 2023 and advised residents to relocate.
Timothy, a local resident, expressed frustration, noting that while a former House of Representatives member had initiated remediation efforts, the situation deteriorated further post-intervention. Other residents estimated property damage exceeding N5 billion and called for urgent government intervention.
Governor Alex Otti has visited the site and pledged to start remediation work. The government proposed relocating residents temporarily to facilitate the repairs; however, there are concerns about potential abandonment.
Residents have requested financial assistance for temporary housing rather than relocation. They fear losing their livelihoods if forced to move and prefer ongoing reconstruction while maintaining their businesses and residences.
“We urge the government to address the erosion crisis immediately. The erosion’s expansion due to flooding poses severe risks. We are concerned about potential abandonment if relocated and prefer financial support to rent housing. We believe reconstruction can proceed while allowing us to continue our lives and businesses. We plead for the government’s prompt aid,” they said.
