RESIDENTS IN ABUJA DEBATE CAUSES OF BROKEN HOMES

< 1 mn read

Residents in Abuja have shared varying opinions on whether poverty or bad spouses are the primary contributors to broken homes. In separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday, individuals expressed their views on this pressing issue.

Marian Waluwe, a civil servant, asserted that a bad spouse is detrimental to marriages, noting that some couples manage to live happily despite financial struggles. She acknowledged that essential needs like food, water, and housing do impact relationships but highlighted that some poor spouses strive to provide for their families.

Conversely, Damian Jari, a trader, stressed the importance of financial stability in marriage, stating, “No one should enter marriage without financial stability. Most family problems stem from the inability to meet financial obligations.”

Another trader, Francis Idah, argued that poverty is a more significant factor in broken homes. He pointed out that poverty disrupts home life, particularly if the man is struggling financially, which may lead to women losing patience.

On the other hand, Ekemini Otong, a surveyor, contended that a toxic spouse can damage a home more quickly than poverty. He explained that an abusive partner can inflict emotional harm, eroding confidence and trust, while poverty is an issue that can be managed.

The diverse perspectives highlight the complexity of the factors contributing to broken homes in Abuja, reflecting the intricate relationship between financial stability and personal dynamics within marriages.
