Rescue operations are underway in Maiduguri, Borno State, following severe flooding caused by the rupture of the Alau Dam on the Ngadda River. The flooding has submerged large parts of the city, including homes, markets, and key infrastructure, leading to significant loss of life and property.

Key Details:

  • Severity of Flooding: The flooding has been described as catastrophic, with large sections of Maiduguri, including Gamboru Market, Kasuwan Shanu, Custom Area, Fori, and Abbaganaram, still under water. This is reported as the worst flood the city has experienced in 30 years.
  • Rescue and Relief Efforts: Military forces, volunteers, and security agencies are working tirelessly to evacuate thousands of people trapped by the flood. The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, visited the worst-hit areas and pledged federal support. Authorities are focusing on evacuating vulnerable groups, including women and children.
  • Impact and Response: The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has released aerial footage showing extensive flooding, with rows of homes submerged. Over 150,000 people from more than 23,000 households are estimated to be affected, though this number could rise to 200,000.
  • Additional Measures: Vice-President Kashim Shettima, a Maiduguri native, also visited the affected areas. He highlighted that the flood resulted from excess water released from the Alau Dam’s spillways. The flooding has disrupted key landmarks and led to the escape of dangerous animals from the city zoo.
  • Government Action: President Bola Tinubu has directed NEMA to assist flood victims, and efforts are ongoing to assess and address the damage. The situation remains dire, with ongoing risks of further flooding.

Authorities and emergency teams are working to manage the crisis and provide relief to the affected residents as quickly as possible.
