Following the global success of his hit single “Calm Down,” Rema has launched his sophomore album, HEIS. In a recent interview on The Breakfast Club, Rema discussed how the album reflects his unique approach to music and his desire to defy conventional expectations.
Rema, known for achieving Afrobeats’ first song to surpass 1 billion Spotify streams, revealed that HEIS represents a deliberate departure from mainstream Nigerian pop music. He explained, “I like the way I moved on to my new project. I don’t like to move the way people expect. I don’t like to move with the rules.” This approach has led to an album with upbeat production and a breathless delivery that stands out from the current Afrobeats scene.
The artist emphasized his intent to create a sound that’s difficult for outsiders to replicate, contrasting with other artists who may simplify the genre for broader appeal. During his London listening party, Rema noted that HEIS was designed to push the boundaries of Afrobeats.
Additionally, Rema reflected on his journey into music, including the initial resistance he faced from his mother regarding his decision to pursue a career as an artist.
